MPD32 & SP303 Midi Hookup

Question on recording with the MPD and SP303

The MPD is setup so bank A and B of the sp will play on the 16 pads of bank A of the MPD. 303 banks C and D play on bank B of the MPD, velocity and all works fine while banging the pads.
As soon as I hit record (on the sp), all midi response dies and I can only use the pads on the 303.
Are others using a midi controller able to record while using it to trigger the pads? I'm not very keen on midi so I'm not sure if I am missing a simple step on why recording cuts off the MPD's midi.

Also has anyone figured out if the control knobs and effects can be controlled by midi or only the pads.

Having the same issue right now on the 404. Can't hold either while triggered with controller.
