All 808

Post by drmnaga78 »

For the SP808 fans, a short mix of three of my recent tracks all made on my SP808, the last track is a slightly extended version of my latest SP Synth battle.
Fucking love the 808, had it since '99 I can't seem to move away from it ;)
Enjoy, let me know what you think.

Yeah , liking this.

Sounds really cool.

Would love to get my own SP-808 up and running again and which I've also had since 99, but it's too far gone for my limited knowledge of electronics to know where to even begin, ,alas.

Nice one, thanks. That's a shame, what's up with it? I have had to replace the zip drive on mine and the pads 1-4 are pretty unresponsive.

The Zip Drive is totally gone, fried ..plus when you turn the sampler on,literally every thing that can light up on the front display does exactly that hehe.

By front display I meant the multi track section, Fx lights etc.not just the screen.

I honestly don't know what even caused this to happen tbh but I was totally frustrated with the 808 by this time as I'd had so many other issues with it over the years.

As I said I still have it and it would be awesome to have it running again in some capacity even if it was just for the onboard effects processing which as you'll obviously know is killer but it will take someone with a much better understanding of how these things work than myself.

That sounds pretty weird. Hopefully it is just the Zip drive tripping out, they are easy to change. I do fear the day that mine has a more serious issue. I was thinking of looking around for a spare, they seem to sell relatively cheaply at the moment.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to listen to my tunes.

Cheers,
D

This mix is really impressive... proves the 808 is still relevant as a workstation.

(I mean, as a tool. IMO the sp808 has everything you need to make MUSIC. I'm kinda combining this thought and your thread with other discussions on this forum apropo folks picking up an sp to make a certain genre/style associated with the particular machine. You got your 808 in '99, Danswift got his in '99, I got my first one in '99... this mix doesn't sound anything like anything but 2018.. props).

My original 808 died for real in 2016. I tried out about 3 or 4 secondhand zips sourced from ebay which sorted out some problems, but they were never as quick/responsive as the original drive, although they did remedy some serious glitching. Effects knobs were shot tho.

I found a replacement 808 a year ago and paid less than 200 euro for it. Original everything, expansion-board and barely used. Is the backbone of my rig, front and center.

Thanks Soul Choppa

Lif, I picked up a MV8000 last year after I got back into using my 808 but it wasn't what I had hoped, I was kind of expecting it to be a better 808, but it doesn't seem to have the audio editing/sequencing that I love so much about the 808 (it is a cool machine though) so it is now relegated to the attic for the time being and I am enjoying my 808 again. Although I had thought for years I should get into using a DAW mainly for more then four tracks, I have realised lately I don need to, I can just enjoy what i do and enjoy the limitations of my trusty old friend :)
