if you make beats and never worked seeing waveforms . i highly recommend it . even if you just mess with the features in a program such as Audacity.

That's why products like Digitatk and MPC (not 500) are so great for slicing up a loop. The visual can get you right where you need to be. Worked for years with PC making tunes and it's a lot easier when manipulating audio with seeing the wav form.

yessir . it can help acknowledge how the sonics of different instruments / samples look . definately makes trimming drum packs more gratifying

I agree. I remember when i first started making beats and i would draw midi notes. Wave forms are also good on a technical standpoint... recorded sounds do not run up your cpu usage. It also helps you understand what your doing when using things like compressors. It just helps you understand music more.

I think thats why people love the MPC2000XL because of its ability to see the waveform as you chop your sample. The 404SX doesn't display the waveform and neither does the MPC3000 yet cats like dilla made arguably the best beats ever on that machine. visuals help but ultimately, its all about your ear.

^ absolute . as Thesis stated .. it makes getting to grips with compressors easier . reference . if youre good at visualizing you can transfer the theory into headspace ( outside of seeing waveforms)

I miss those days of dropping in midi notes and spending hours playing around but in the end I was never satisfied with the finished product.

I actually feel the opposite,I feel that visual wave form is a hindrance.

Agreed.

I've never used a computer to make a track with yet although I definitely want to get down with Ableton and learn the process of working with the program at some point in the future.

I'll do it soon....erm possibly.

I just make the tracks on the 404 ,using resampling to build up the loops I'm making.

When everything is arranged I just smash it out on the pads doing alternative live takes and making adjustments to the arrangements if I need to.

I always record direct to Mini disc or tape machine and upload from there...it's a pretty straightforward and simple method of doing things but it's fine for what I need at the moment.

The wave form don't show you the volumes from the different frequencies. It's a nice helping tool, but first trust your ears. It's music, not a movie.

DILLA used the SP1200 and MPC3000 both have no visual wave forms,Chopping by numbers just like the SP-series..

.. fair play . not sure where I read .. but I'm sure Dilla had a protocols setup . And from what I've read on Stones throw site via quote of Peanut Butter Wolf .. the cult classic Donuts was mixed on a laptop

but created with the SP-303 and some 45's

Dilla was more prone to use his ear.
