What size SM card do you use?

Post by daera »

A couple questions...
My 505 is on the way, but without a memory card.
I believe i can just use internal memory for now.. but what size SM card is best to you?
I heard larger cards have larger load times, is this significant enough for you to prefer smaller cards?
Im feeling like maybe im better off with a couple 16mb cards rather than one larger card if this is the case.
Thanks

I have a 64MB card and there are no load times. Turn the unit on, select a card bank, samples are there, no load.
Perhaps the sampling initialization phase is longer on a big card, not sure.
At least on my unit, the first time you sample after turning it on you have to wait 10-15 seconds after you press the sample button. Only the first time. After that it's about 2-3 seconds of wait time. Well, it's a sampler, not a looper :)
Organizing your samples on user banks or card banks is strategic, because card banks have much more room, but cannot be accessed only by pressing pads. You need to use the wheel to select a bank number higher than bank 16.

Sounds perfect and 64mb seems like a good size if thats the case.
Coming from a 404sx i was getting a lil worried how laggy i could make this machine.

Thats good news tho, I love the idea of storing essential stuff on the internal and more specific song samples on the card.
Im getting more excited for this thing.. thanks for your help!

You're welcome. I'm still a beginner with the 505 :)

One thing I wonder is what the wait time before sampling depends on? If anyone has a clue...

I remember a video ou Youtube by Olby where he was able to launch recording almost immediately, whereas after I press the Sample button, I always have to wait 2-3 seconds minimum before I can select the pad to record the sample.

The wait time didn't surprise me (after all, that's a quite old OS and technology) but when I saw Olby's video I wondered if my unit could be faulty.

I confirm the larger the card the longer the wait time at first sampling initialization. Up to 18s. with with a 128MB card and 2s. without card.
