404 vs 404SX as fx box

Post by crimson2877 »

So I already have an MPC 1000, and I'm looking at the SP's now because they're more portable (battery powered) and also have a bit of a dual use, as an fx box. Can't decide between these two models though. Is there any real difference between them when used mainly for the fx? I know the sx uses sd cards vs the og's cf cards, but either one of those seems fine to me, the mpc 1000 is a cf/usb interface to the computer. I've heard the sx works faster, but has a different vinyl sim. On ebay there doesnt seem to be a huge price difference. So yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd cop the Sx. They are fast
I find the 303 has the butter effects, but all the SP s pack a more than adequate effects arsenal. The Sx is faster, sexier, and they play nice with ableton or whatever you use.

I can only comment on the SX, only SP I've used/owned but it's effects are bad ass. Hard to write music when all I do is jam with it.

How does the 404sx play nicer with Ableton Live or any daw? Isn’t it possible to set up the 404og as a external effect in Ableton?

If we are talking about fx, in my opinion the OG is better.

I think any sp would go good with an MPC, I have the 404sx & combined with MPC's it's a great combo (have the 500 & 2500, used to have the 1000, but gave it to my brother). I've never used the 404og, but heard a lot on this forum that the effects are better (some say just a little better, some say a lot better). I like the sx a lot tho. I really like the effects & it has a ton of memory. I'm not sure how big of a memory card you can have with the og, but I have gone as big as 32gb with the sx. I know that's a lot of memory & there are only 120 spots/pads to save beats/samples, but I already have 19 memory cards for the sx full of beats & samples (ranging from 8gb to 32 gb). If I make a beat on 1 of the MPC's, I play it out live into the 404, save em all on the same card & then I play little live sets on the 404 (using the effects & vocal scratches). A card fills up fast when fillin it with beats. Something to think about if you plan to play with your beats on it or make beats in resample mode. BUT you can always buy more cards :o)

My two cents...I've had both and recently sold the sx - I would recommend the OG

I never tried the 404sx, but it's certainly easier to find one in a good shape. My og is ok but the pads start to get tired and the volume pot crackle a little bit.
I'm so french that my english is lofier than my beats
