750 vs 250 MB zip drive performance on SP-808

Post by manneokoko »

Hello,

Im thinking to upgrade the zipdrive on the SP-808 and I find different information on which drive is the fastest. Some people say that the 750 MB is performing better with fewer drop outs, while others say that the 250 is faster.
My logic tells me that the 750 is faster since it is newer and faster from factory, but maybe it works different in the SP808.

Anybody have first hand experience ?

I'd say go for it! I was actually thinking of adding a Zip750 drive in my 808 also since I gave up on adding a card reader or internal hard drive in it.

I've modded few MPC2000XL's with Zip750 drives and they were more reliable and less problematic than the crappy Zip250 & Zip100 drives. The only problem was that the 750 drive reads and writes to 750 & 250 disks but it only reads the 100 disks. So if you have hundreds of Zip100 disks you might want to get an extra Zip250 drive to use the 100 disks on.

I meant to report back on this...
I upgraded the SP-808 OS to the SP-808ex OS so I could use the Zip750 drive. It works better with a lot more storage and sample time.

Just adding to this for reference sake. Had my 750drive in for a couple of months. Obvious storage benefits but starting to have a few issues with 'drive busy' seems much more than when I as running 100meg discs/drive. Had a few scary moments recently where I thought the 'click of death' was about to happen. I hope not any time soon.
