Thinking about selling my SP-303. Am i stupid? :)

Post by squ!L »

Hey guys! I think i already know that i shouldn't sell my SP-303 but it's always good to get advice from other SP heads before taking these life changing decisions.

I have a SP-404 OG, SP-202 and this beautiful SP-303. I bought some new synths and outboard gear and need to sell some stuff.
I made some EP's where i ran the whole mixes through the 303 vinyl sim and they sound lo-fi and grimy and all that. But in the last years i haven't used it anymore. I want to keep the 404 because the workflow was always better for me and the beloved vinyl sim effect is not too different from the 303.
So all in all i won't use the 303 more than maybe twice a year but i fear that i will regret it if i sell it. Looks cool, sounds cool...

How do you feel about your 303?
Will you ever part from it?
Did you sell it and regretted it?
Did you sell it and bought another one later?
Did you sell it and life is good without it? :)

Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts.

I literally havent thought about my 303 since I sold it. If youre not useing it then you should sell it. The only reason you kept it is because of the vinyl sim effect. And if you have something else that can replicate it than there is no reason to keep it.

You're probably right. But i also kept it because i made dope beats with it and everytime i'll listen to them i'll be a little sad. And because Madlib and JDilla and... used it. :) But that's not really a reason to keept it. Or is it?
Thanks for helping me decide. Maybe i should let it go. :(

^second that notion.

I have eventually come to regret selling any decent out-of-production unit I have ever chosen to sell (for me it's the 505 & 555). If u have one that works well, keep it! U will probably buy another one sometime down the road & pay more for a unit that isn't in as good condition. Plus whatever u want the money for may not b all u r imagining it to b.

Sounds like u really love that lil 303. Would u sell an old faithful dog just to get money for a new one? No way.

One day u might pass it on to ur son/daughter... or some other person whose life u will forever change for the better!

It depends on the person, but fo me, I dont hold sentimental value on objects relateing to me (clothes, equipment, art, songs). I think the OP does hold that value, but its not strong enough to keep it. Honestly you could keep it or sell it. Im assumeing, since you didnt say anything about needing money, that $280-300 isnt thebiggest deal to you, compared to future usefulness.

Thanks for further advice! Now the decision didn't get any easier. :) But it's good to hear both sides. Learning to let go of things is definitely a lesson to learn for me. But the silvery classy looking 303 indeed holds some sentimental value to me. Hm... :?: :D

i had all of the Roland/Boss SP-Series and the 303 is by far my favourite. i would never ever let this go... The Vinyl Sim, the Long Mode, the whole Sound/character, the pads, the Look, usability, i could go on and on.... i simply love my 303.

But i'm thinking about selling one of my 404 (OG/SX) now and then just because the MARK button doesn't work nearly as good as on the 303 and that sh!t sucks big time if you make a microwave beat but then spending 10min to get that perfect Loop. on the 303 i never get this Problem...

i've never really appreciate the 303:
no portability, i find a kind of lag in pads, his sounds is for me between the 404 and 202 so i rather ride this 2 (some guys will kill me hahaha)
ok the start/end is maybe better and there is the ext source resample but... double og 404 combo shhhhh....
404 202 combo phhhhh...

Thank you for your thoughts guys! I decided to keep it for now because i'll probably miss it. Funny to see how the opinions differ. Mirrors how i think about it. One day i want to sell it, next day i know i'll keep it.

I've bought and sold a few SP's over the years (202,303,404SX,505 & 808) and the only two that I bought a!second time were the 505 and 404SX.
I liked my 303 but I'd bought it for cheap after selling my first 404SX and to be honest I just found it less convenient to use.
