Just got an SP-606, how to use without memory card?

Hi!

Just got an SP-606, waiting on the 512mb card from Amazon.

I can't seem to sample anything to internal memory though. The memory screen says 0.0/16MB available, but I don't have a single pad filled. There are also no patterns or songs recorded.

When I try to sample, if I select "Stereo", or "Mono"/"Mono L+R" I get the error, "Sample Memory Full". For a little while, I could actually start the sampling process, but it never actually saved anything. I can see input coming in the mixer in the play window, so it's not that I'm not playing any audio

Is there any thing I'm forgetting? I don't see anything else I can delete, but it still says I have my internal memory filled. Is it just impossible to use the 606 without a card?

the lower pad banks are internal. i think 1-16.
