Sample volume too low

Post by runcircles »

Hey guys, I recently copped a 404SX to try to move away from writing at the computer. Problem is, when I import samples into it they're so low in volume I have to max out my pre-amp gain to even be able to hear them properly. At that point if I apply any effects they're deafeningly loud. What gives? I've tried using a wide variety of normalized samples.

1.

How are you sampling? Microphone Line in, or the RCA inputs?

2.

When you are recording in the knob on the top right. Is that turned all the way to the right?

3.

What are you sampling from? Computer? Tape?

There is an internal gain staging function, page 39 of the manual. There is also an effect limiter that can tame some of the wild effects in the sp...if you're into that. RTFM!

I am also having the same problem at the moment.

Is it normal to sample straight in from a deck's RCA leads? I've got a 1210. I have assumed so as it has the static screw on the back of the SP, however I wouldn't be surprised if I need to use an amp before?

yes you need an amp (or DJ Mixer with built in amp)
