here is something i just figured out and im sure most people know about it already (it has probably already been mentioned).
on the MPCs there is a feature where you play a pad and when you play another pad the original pad stops playing. you can do something like this on the 404 but its just a little harder. first take gate off all the samples you want to use, so you press the pad once and it plays the whole sample, and turn loop on. now play your first sample and when you are playing your second sample hit that pad and the first pad at the same time. this will trigger the second pad and cut off the first pad at the same time. you have to get used to it but ive found it kind of useful.
