I've heard all of those you've mentioned live ánd a capella in a TV show up close and those people really can sing without those tools too. So... I'm assuming here it's more a method to save time recording the studio versions than adding more quality to their vocals... Back in earlier days I used to hear that these kind of programs still need relatively accurate vocal tones from the singer to even work right... still the guitar example seems to show things have come an incredible way since then.

Youi right they can really sing.. but you have peeps like Jessica simpson, and no doubt that sounds freaking amazing on CD but in person they sound good but not as great as on their CD..

I have mixed feelings about the technique.

Yeah it is definitely great, as long as your sample library is good, you can create whatever your want.

Now imagine taking an old record, sampling it, changing the harmony on one click. I am not sure I like it. see ?

'Cause even if we do sample old records, flip samples, distort them, we respect the music, we don't go back in the recording studio in the 70's, change a few notes and pretend it's our own melody. This will happen, for sure...

That's basically just the way it is and always will be... Making new music out of old music is what everybody does who's using samples anyways, so I don't see the problem.

You can use samples, flip them and at the same time pay a tribute to the old days. How will you recognize and see a tribute in some sample if the harmonies are changed ? How is it a tribute if you didn't like the harmonies and notes enough to keep them as they were once played ?

I do not say it is not creative, cause it is. I only say it goes against my attitude towards sampling music (see how I did use "music" and not "sounds"). If it is what everybody does, then I am not everybody.

Man! I use to mess with melodyne some years back & thought it was innovative back then. Now they're breaking more boundaries. I think if truly talented & creative people can find a way to incorporate something like this into their setup I would love to hear what they come up with. Wonderful piece of ware. I still like it.
