When using the 606 as a soundcard, you can record anything playing from the 606 directly into your audio editor through the USB cable. This is pretty spesh, as it means that you have a 100% digital recording path, ie : -inf DB noise floor!!!

Of course the digital connections can achieve the same thing - but you need digital connections on the computer to do it, meaning more cash.

Method

Step 1: Setup the 606 as the soundcard for your comp.

Step 2: go to [menu] and go to [USB audio/midi]

Step 3: change the source from 'input' to 'mix' (this transmits audio down the USB cable).

Step 4: set up your audio editor to record (I use Soundforge, but even Audacity would do).

Step 5: hit record, and start playing! You can bash pads live, play sequences, use FX, the filter, whatever and everything will be captured perfectly, with absolutely no noise whatsoever, none at all!!!!

Step 6: edit loop points and save! import back to the 606 for live stuff and extra processing. Repeat ad infinitum - with no noise you can resample forever!!!! mwahahahahaha


This is particularly cool with Recycle!, as you can play drums live, by feel (no quantise) and use Recycle to make them fit the tempo of your track - extra coolness

Yo fam.. I just got my 606 and its dope.. I'm using soundforge to record my joints too via usb.. But my recordings are quite and I got the volume up on the 606.. How can I get my recordings louder in soundforge.. Thanx fam..

@Erbs:My recs are low too via usb...even with the digital out to my m-audio 24/96 soundcard i have the same problem...try normalizing your sounds.i don't use soundforge anymore by i'm 100% sure it has a 'normalize' function!

This plug in will raise the volume level in a really nice way - way better than normalizing. It's a free download from the wonderful gents at Sonalksis. This is what I use. Because there's NO noise in the signal, you can really crank it up!

no worries man. One final thing to remember; don't let the signal clip (go into the red). Digital clipping sounds HORRIBLE.

Perhaps a silly question, but do you use the same headphones or speakers for playback in both scenarios? It may be that through a headphone directly plugged into your gear it sounds great, but doesn't sound good through different speakers..... If I want my music to sound good on my PC speakers, it needs a lot more punch, more bass and so on. Perhaps, you're experiencing this 'problem'?

All that aside... if what comes out of your SP doesn't get recorded exactly as it comes out, you might want to look at a different way of recording your sounds. For example through an extra audio interface.

I mounted the SP 606 as an external USB soundcard for Sonar. I used the same headphones to monitor and playback, but the recorded sound was muddier than the signal I got when I was testing the sound prior to recording. I've started looking at USB soundcards with pre-amps now (Line 6 GX, etc.), but I really wanted to be able to use the SP606.
