Getting rid of background hiss noise when recording in

So whenever I record into the 404 I get this annoying hiss. It's pretty noticable, especially on drums. I have tried so many things to get rid of it. Such as run of battery's, different cables, different sources you name it I have tried it. Is it a problem with my outputs or inputs? If so how could I fix this? By the way I know it's lofi or whatever, but I have been trying to make cleaner stuff recently, so any help would be great.

if youre talking mic input, try turning down the mic gain on the 404 . it does start to hiss when you turn to full capacity

as for rca inputs .. could be the source youve plugged in causing hiss

there will always be some kind of hiss .. that can be reduced with post production editing .. ie EQ . Roll of around 12k upwards to minimise the hiss levels

The 404 is only "lofi" when you use the lofi setting. Otherwise, it's recording high quality uncompressed stereo wav files. If I sample from a clean source my samples come out pretty clean.

In any case, I use the filter-drive effect to reduce hiss when I sample into my 404SX and I think it works pretty well.

Before you sample, press "external source" so the button lights up and then press "filter + drive" so that button also lights up. Now the filter effect is being applied to the audio signal you're sampling and you can adjust the filter with control knob1 to cut out hiss but it will also cut out some of your high end and you can adjust the control 2 and 3 knobs to adjust resonance and drive. It works great to fatten up your drum sounds.

Also make sure you don't have the 404's onboard mic on at the same time you sample from the RCA inputs because I think they can both be on at the same time and then you'll definitely get a lot of hiss.

I am also having problems recording using external mic (in my case Shure Sm57). I know that Sm57 excels in picking up a hum noise, but strangely when i hold one hand on Shure and the other one on jack's metal part near MIC in I am getting clean signal.
Do you have any tips to avoid this "technique"?
