Help!! give me new ideas please.

Post by oates »

I've been on the SPs for a year or so now and I think my process is getting boring and repetitive. I'm posting to get some advice on spicing up my beats up with different sp-404 techniques.

https://soundcloud.com/obliging-otis/lan-coverjpg

My process so far has been I sample a 2 bar loop to the sp-202 on lo-fi mode then I pitch shift and resample to the sp-404 where I chop the loop into quarter notes. Then I resample the chops over some drums with the vinyl sim on everything.

What kind shit would you recommend I do to this loop? And what kinda techniques do you use when making beats to obtain certain sounds?

Why have you got to chop a loop? You've never tried chopping different parts of a track by listening for the chords you want or the best bits? Youre asking for us to tell you how to be creative basically. You have to try new things man

Thanks. yeah I have no idea why I'm asking y'all this. I think I hate myself and fail to trust my own instincts. I can be creative as shit I just tend to not love my art because of some deficiency with in myself. thanks man.

check out my dope shit. I love myself.

Throw your current formula out the window man.... If you make beats the same as that every time of course you will get bored.

There was a period where I made sure that I did something I've never done before on every beat or in every jam session. Try that. Even if the music is shit you will learn things.

Its all just experimentation yo

after a long while of kind of designing directions to take ive kind of started just going a more chance taking route and just chopping up random samples again.

Perhaps get more considerate with your sample specifications

eg. use a specific type of snare from a specific genre type.

Use vocals from a specific genre type.

use synth sounds from a specific type of synth.

i get down on myself sometimes too. sort of like a creative identity crisis or something.

you just gotta keep pushing ahead. take an analytical/strategic/tactical look at your process and think conceptually about what you want to accomplish.

chop samples differently, stop using samples completely and only put stuff in the 404 that you made yourself, take up a new instrument (for example, buy a big floor tom and make tracks you can do crazy tribal drumming to), come up with ideas for stories or short films and then make tracks that either come from the world of your story or that would score this imaginary short film, do long one-take improv sessions with synths or random instruments and then chop that up and sample it, invite a friend(s) to come make music with you...
