everything i do on sp 606 is in mono... stereo limits polyphony (606 has less than 404 does) so I'm pretty much forced to go mono unless i'm looping a drum break.

why do you loop a drum break in stereo? i mean, what result do you intend to have with this???

I'ma hazard a guess that if you loop a drumbreak, the drum break is in mono freeing up polyphony for stereo chops. If drum hits are separate then to construct a track with more variety of sounds everything would have to be mono to get the most out of the 606's limits. (I don't have a 606, this is just how I understood teewok's post)

On the other hand, drums sound best in stereo... hi-hats and crash on the left, snare maybe slight left or centre, bass def. centre, ride(s) on the right and toms spread across the spectrum left to right so the listener hears exactly what the drummer hears... (bugs me to hell if i hear hihats on the right to the point id reverse my headphones if i heard someone mix like that )

i been getting into bouncing to another source then back to the 404 at some point, to maximize poly for the resample.
so, never always. if i hear no significant loss in the desired sample/resample mono is cool. i ride the line when applying reverb and delay while sampling, dont want to loose/sacrifice the spacial feel some times...

I picked up a 404sx about a week ago... as ya'll know I've been strictly 808 all the time, which has 4-pad poly regardless of stereo or mono samples, regardless whether live-playing or resampling.

So when I see the 404 has 4-pad poly for live-play but down to 2-pad-only in stereo resample, first I'm thinking wtf??!

I got nothing really against mono, but for the fact with the 404 you gotta remember to disengage the stereo button for every mono sample-capture -- well, a new habit to get into, but the only way to really create decent/interesting chop-play, at least in the way I'm accustomed to.

Anyway, these two machines together is like the dream-team.. 404 is undoubtedly awesome but has also shown me just what a mf powerhouse the 808 is... hooking them together/bouncing back and forth like amplifies all that's good about the both of them.

Yup I produce mainly in the mono realm. Stereo is for the final master mix. I use y cables and sample in mono mode. Then I track it all out to my DAW and pan them for stereo effect. I prefer this way because sampling in stereo gets kinda disappointing and wonky afterwards.
