Use what ever makes the end result you are looking for. Never limit your creativity due to a perception of it lacking authenticity in another persons mind, music is an extension of your expression and you can never be wrong or mess up. That being said there is a lot to be experienced from traditions and understanding the development of a certain style or culture. I would also say from a purely technical view it can be more difficult to get a cohesive sound/mix when using a ton of different sources unless you have a good ear for pitch and want to shift things to match. If you grab your drums and sounds from the same track on a record you can be sure everything down the the snare is tuned in key. If the kick isn't boomin' and the snares aren't cracking, you are forced to get into some engineer/mixing which opens up your skill set in the end.

i obviously wouldnt give someone points for sound design if they were only using using samples/ or sample packs...

their sequencing, ear for samples, and processing of those samples would be what would be impressive in that case.
