Need advice or input on going from pic to Mac

i think I'm gonna buy a Mac laptop. It seems ridiculous since most of my production is done in the sp, I just track it out a little. But for beats with more processing or even just sitting around with my boys recording half ass raps I need something that won't run bogged down. After too much going on at once my pc glitches and freezes. Plus I want a laptop so I can do editing while I'm kicking back in front of the TV. Suggestions?

well, you said you wanna get a mac and that's a good choice. they are expensive though.

I couldn't afford one when I was in your shoes, having a pc just refuse to work well for what ever reason is frustrating. so I went to Linux.

it was a good choice for me but it did mean I had to take time to learn how to use a Linux d.a.w.

Linux run lighter weight than even a mac and everything on it is free. no worries about viruses but a huge learning curve.

PC's are easy to use but are still virus prone, tend to get bogged down after a year or so unless you use them for only one thing.

Macs are easy to use, rock solid, virus resistant but expensive as hell.

your choice really.

you could buy a new pc laptop for about 800-900 $'s and just turn it to a hackintosh.

I would just grab a macbook. I am on my third since 2005. They generally last about five years of heavy abuse. Just make sure to grab something no older than 2012 so you can still be on latest os. I grabbed my last used 2009 macbook for 300 on amazon. I think it only has 2 gb of ram. The last one only had one gb and I could run ableton pretty hard on it with no problems. Just make sure to get one with enuff ram to accommodate what you are running and you will never look back. Good thing about buying used mac is that its like the iphones. A new one comes out every year. This means people are selling barely used laptops at a decent price. I would recommend checking craigslistarea. If you are niot a fan try amazon or ebay. You could prolly even pick up a real nice macbook pro and have a couple hundred left to put elsewhere. I would just make sure if you buy used seller has it running latest os. That way you know you can get a good five to seven years out of it while being able to run latest os. Good luck on your quest, any questions hmu. Peace.

wow. no modern daw will run well with 1 gb of ram. 4 is the bear minium, 8 gb's is comfortable. 16GB is where you don't worry about your ram for media creation (audio/video) but other things could still cause problems.

I’ve got 23.5Gb's in my workstation, still the memory leak in firefox will fill the ram and cause app's to crash after a couple of days.

There are also good windows Laptops for music stuff. Think pads are very good. Plus you dont have to pay for the name

your are a liar or you use Ableton to do absolutely nothing of consequence.

if your running a beat on one track, vocals on another and got one AU applying an effect then yeah, you can get away with having two gigs of ram.

it won't be stable but it could work. mavericks, Yosemite and El' Capitan all have a minimum system requirement of 2Gb of ram though. "minimum" as in "it needs this to run but don't expect much."

why don't you try making a track that sounds professional though.

right now I have about 20 individual tracks that make up a beat loaded in ardour and that part of the project uses about 4-5 effects plugs.

I’ve got about 43 vocal track parts on my time-line as well. some of those tracks are sharing 3 effects plug-ins, others are sharing another 5 plugs.

that,... is not even a "big project". add to that my browsers open with 14 tabs open. this a media creation machine and as such I can do this and more.

this machine isn't here for me to sit and smoke while making a few bullshit tracks with my boys, I make music.

Mac's can be media machines too but you've got to give them the resources they need to work.

Ableton Live 9 system requirements:

dude you said you got a macbook with two gigs of ram and run ableton live 9 on it with no issue. the minimum system requirements for ableton live 9 is 4 gigs of ram. that is suggesting an underpowered machine. now if you had said you ran with "2 gig of ram but I didn't suggest you do that" then you would indeed only been suggesting a mac capable of running the Latest OS X.

Mr. Davenport said he wanted to cop a macbook for 1k that could do processor intensive audio work. the closest one would be a 13 inch MBP
that would still be $200 above his 1k limit. therefore I thought he would not be able to afford his mac. he said he's leaving p.c.'s, I didn't think suggesting Linux to him would be useful, as I said, Linux for audio comes with a high learning curve. not everyone is willing to spend a few years relearning everything. so I thought a Hackintosh might be a suggestion.
I have a desktop I use as a Hackintosh just to run smith-micro animation, 3d and drawing software that I can't run in wine on my Linux box. it's been good to me and I thought I’d suggest it. you wisely said :

that was a good call, I hadn’t considered that, the only issue I had with your post was you told OP that you run ableton9 with 2 gigs of ram with no issue.

that may make the OP think that he can spend on a MBP with 2 gigs of ram and he's set. that's not the case, any modern D.A.W. doing processor intensive work will need more ram than that.

40 tracks and ten plugins is not a lot in professional audio work, like I said you ain't doin shit in your D.A.W. that's why your not having issues. I said, "I’m on Linux", everything on it including the plugins are free. didn't think you could be "Fucking pompous" using free shit.

I went with the Mac. It came with a shit load of free software too. 4 gigs so I should be ok for now but definitely open to installing more ram in the near future.
