As many of you already know, one could web surf over to www.loopmasters.com, and find plenty of drum kits, bass lines, melodies, vocals, fx, synths for just about any genre from Trap to techno, hip hop to house, glitch to EDM, etc.

This isn't really nothing but a candy store of samples, and you at least get a demo of what there is to choose from before you decide to pay any money to dl whatever sample packs you could choose from.

But what are your thoughts of obtaining your samples from them in general? Did it make you lazy on your SP beat making? Did it make your beats stand out? Or was it more of a hassle from deciding what you would feed into your SP of all the different kicks/snares/hi hats to choose from?

Did it feel like you saved any time from having to dig in your crates for the right sample to fit with the beat you were creating from scratch? Or was it a waste of money, left you no inspiration and take some of the fun or joy out of it?

If you think it's fair game or cheating, just say what you will about it. Just was always curious if any of you paid for your samples or if you wouldn't even use a sample from them if you could help it.

Just curious.....

I like 99sounds better! I got some nice drum sounds there. In general, it's more to get ideas to make my own sounds. You can even post your own packs there I think too.

LesPasta, what's wack about it? Just curious on your two cents....

SebP, I will have to check out 99sounds.

Actually, just did. It's cool, love that it's all free, but just not quite as much compared to Loopmasters. I'll have to fire up my pic and dl some of these though.

It wouldn't be my first choice of a place to sample from, unless I really needed that one element to cement my beat. I think if one would take a sample from there and flip it in a very unique or unrecognizable way it could be cool.

I believe that listening for and selecting your samples from within the context of the original source material is essential to the foundation of sample based music. It shows the artists "hand" in work that is constructed from other artists work through the use machines and computers.

I believe that this starts to disappear when we start using prefabricated sample packs and loops that other people selected and share on the web..

Good point. But while purchasing or getting a free samplepack to find something that did all the work in selecting/organizing for you is I suppose a short cut, I also see how it's the hard work of crafting, tweaking, chopping a sound into a sample to come up with a new sound that's the hard work. But suppose you need a bassline or guitar part for your beat, but you're never going to want to invest the money to buy a 4 string bass or 6 or 12 string guitar, spend who knows how long to practice the time to make the riff or bassline fit into the beat that just needs that something you want to toss in. I suppose there is nothing wrong with learning a musical instrument, because your brain will start to learn chords/melodies in a way that you might not with just sampling, but for someone who might not want to wait years to toss in the missing ingredient, that's what a sample pack might do for any producer.

I have dl some video game samplepacks and a few free ones, and I like to check out all the variety that's out there, but I do wonder how much one might spend on samples, until they find what they're looking for, but what to do with all the other samples in a file folder on your pc/mac HD? Perhaps for every sample you use, there could be 2000 you won't.

However, there might be some samples that you'd never find in any record store, no matter how much you spent or digged through their crates of dusty vinyl. I guess it's up to the individual to decide what works for them.

oh I have used manufactured samples before... i can;t remember a particular time but i know that i have..

just that it is in conflict with my philosophy and beat theory

also, im not necessarily concerned with "hard work" ....sometimes it is a lot of work to make your beat sound right but sometimes it just happens with little or no effort... and that's ok to

a lot of people put a lot of efforts into finding OG samples on OG 33rpms while at the other end they produce SHIT music. ill take samples from wax if they sound ight, but ill apply this rule to anything that can be sampled.

To each his own.

I am not a huge fan of the site, but for people just starting out... It could be a really useful tool!

At the end of the day, all that matters is what comes outta yer SP when yer done.
Digital or Analog, Hardware or Software, Vinyl or mp3, Hifi or Lofi; Dope is dope, and whack is whack.

You got yer own convictions or limitations, then right on, that's part of your process, but don't let stigma or drama bullshit keep you from expressing yerself.

Personally that shit is not for me, digging records in weird and wonderful places all over the world is part of the fun. Loops can be fun for a techno jam with a load of MIDI'd up stuff but even then why not make your own loops on a synth which is just as easy if not more than logging into loads of internet bullshit.

I don't want my choices to be dictated by a website and I don't want to sit at my computer all day ''digging'' on the internet.

The main point perhaps is to find samples that no one else has, which seemed to be a main philosophy of the OG's like Dilla etc!

Someone mentioned video games, that shit I will absolutely NEVER sample from the internet and only ever from the real hardware because otherwise you can never get the real sound.
