MC505 + SP606 midi problem (it's always midi innit)

This is driving me round the bend, I hope someone can help. I think this is more of a MC505 issue than a SP606 issue to be honest.

I'm using the sequencer of the MC505 to trigger samples on the SP606.

What I don't understand is that I'm able to stop the keys playing samples (i.e. set the channel to INT), so that when I record something onto a channel (say channel 1) it only plays the internal sounds of the MC505, not the samples.

But, when I playback the pattern, the channel starts triggering samples.

What I wanted was to use channels 5, 6 and 7 for samples (i.e. padbanks 17-20, 21-24, 25-29) that I'd use in tunes, giving me all the other padpanks just to mess around with samples on. But it seems at the moment that I have to leave padbanks 1-16 empty because otherwise anything I record on channels 1-4 will trigger those samples. That just seems stupid.

I can't seem to find any setting on the MC505 to stop it sending channel 1-4 data out on midi during playback, only for where it sends the key hits.

Is there any way to accomplish what I'm trying, or am I using the sequencer + sampler combination wrong?

I had the same problem sort of while using the SP-606 with Fruityloops. My 1-16 are empty because of that, but I'm sure there should be a way around this. Haven't found it yet though....

Well that's all rather embarrassing.

SEQ OUT will do the trick, funnily enough. Shift 8. It's settable per pattern.

I use my MC-505 and SP-606 the other way around - the 606 as master and the 505 as slave. This is because I often use loops with my music and the 606 can get a little upset if you try to play a loop at a vastly different tempo (the bpm sync only really works for about +/- 10bpm). The 606 also saves tempo with the pattern so it's handy for making sure everything is as it should be when performing live. The 505 handles jumping from any tempo to any other tempo with no probs.

*I realise though, that you are interested in triggering, so this is probably no help to you, although it may interest others with a similar setup*

To be honest I'm not sure why you'd use it the other way round. What are you making the 505 do from the 606?

I don't like the sequencer of the 606. Far too limiting.

BTW, I hope that ^ didn't come across as rude.

I don't claim to be a master on any of this kit (far from it) and am more than willing to learn the different stuff this kit can do.

The 606 is playing patterns and the 505 is playing patterns. There's a Yamaha RY30 in there too. Each machine is doing it's own thing and midid is just keeping them synced.

4 track 606
16 track 505
8 track RY30

28 tracks = more than enough for live work!

I had the 505 and the RY30 for years, and the 606 was a perfect addition to the rig becuase it allows the use of samples. Most of my work is synth-based (I'm a technohead), so I just needed a unit to drop in the odd sample. 4 tracks is more than enough for this.

ps - I love the 606 sequencer - it's way better than the tedious 505 one! But opinions are like arseholes - everyone's got one :lol:
