Shure SM57 into SP-404SX

Post by Joshbo »

Hi there,

I recently got a Shure SM57, and after plugging it into the mic in port on the SP, the sound is genuinely great! It, in fact, sounds better through the SP than it does through my interface (which has built in pre-amps and still requires me to crank up the gain for it to be adequately audible). Has anybody else tried to use a dynamic mic with the SP, and what does it sound like to you? I'm just wondering whether the SP-404SX has a built in pre-amp after all..

I've plugged bullet mics and a 57 as well. It's a pretty full sound considering. I'm not sure but I think the trim knob(volume) indicates there must be some sort of basic preamp in it. Maybe it sounds good because it's not mucked up with a bunch extra stuff. It's really just the mic you are hearing.

It's really hard to fuck up a 57! Worst part is managing the plosives, poppin' P's, etc. They make decent pop filters that fit nicely over the 57.

If you have a preamp and an omni condenser... gain it hard at the pre, point it at drums and go to town. Supa crunch den drums.

The 57's to crunch down too but it will take an assload of gain.
When you guys used your 57 with the SP did you have to gain it to max or were you getting healthy signal way before maximum?

connect an Art Tube Pre Amp to the mic and then into the SP. Sounds lovely. The ART pre amp has a decent tube inside of it to make things sound warm!
