ok maybe it's just me but, it seems as though these forums are dying. I feel like most of the OGs from this board that inspired me to start making beats in the first place no longer fuck with these forums. I feel like we, as a community should get these forums bumping again somehow. I'm a little drunk so maybe this is perhaps a stupid idea so forgive me if so, but I'd love to help out in some way to make these forums dope again.. Maybe the music page on here could use some new material.. or another sp-forums "theme" beattape like the Around the World in 80z Flipz album.. just random thought that came to my mind.
have a good night everybody

There's a few reasons you are seeing a decline.

1. There hasn't been any new SP models released in a good long time. So less travel to the forum.

2. The SP hype machine has died down since the (dilla, madlib, dibiase) SP craze.

3. The forums are not easily accessible to new member since they now need to jump through the SPAM prevention hoops.

4. The good majority of SP related questions have been answered like 10 times over.

5. The forum owners/admins have no plans of enhancing or updating the forums. I've made a few threads about gaining control and doing a revamp, but only a couple people stepped up to plate and wanted to take some initiative.

I'd love to see the forum grow, but I'd also just like to embrace what we still have. The old forum members are still kicking around they just need some proper motivation to come out of hibernation. For me personally, beat making has taken a back seat to other "life" stuff, but I will still get down when I have the time/motivation. Hell, I spent all winter collecting new sample material to feed my machines :)

Thanks Andy. It really isn't even work. I compile entries into a file, not hounding for beats, just accepting them as they come. Then, when the time comes, arrange, listen and edit, listen and edit again and mmmm drop! If anyone else would like to spearhead the next tape, please feel free. I'm not trying to hog all the fun.
I think the site is still quite alive. There's constant flow in the music thread and the last battle had like 20 entries.
I get emails all the time asking for the password for new users. Its been at least one a week ever since the site was reopened. I love it. Its the easiest and most pleasurable gatekeeping type of job that I can imagine.

As for another SP fam tape, I'd be more than happy to organize it if nobody else wants to.
Any theme ideas?
Movie Night?
Organic Sounds?
Yacht Rock?

How about flipping the worst of pop music?

p.s. I'm planning to post SP World 5 tonight at midnight CST!

If you look here, you'll see 22 new members have joined this month alone. memberlist.php?mode=&sk=c&sd=d

I'm thinking that hanging on these forums at 3 am my time is what makes it seem like a ghost town here. and word, I know you've been holding it down over here for a long time Chopperman and I have mad respect for you for that. as for the SP hype I have noticed a big decline in that as well, it seems like most artists that used the 404 like jonwayne and dibiase hardly even sample now and switched from sp to software. which is cool and their music is still dope.I guess I'm just one of those purists that refuses to let the music I listen to and love die 8) although that Parallax Tapes album will be insanely dope and I'm really looking forward to that.
I just see so much potential in the sp machines and they are so fun. I mean I have a maschine and the thing collects dust because it's so slow and sounds too organized compared to sp's or mpcs..also I remember I used to come on here before I ever even got an sp just because of somebody I heard on soundcloud and listened to all the albums posted in the music section. which they are all insanely dope but maybe music should be added to that page to keep it relevant and keep inspiring newbies like myself :D and I loved the video game flip tapes and whatnot but that had its time. The movie night idea sounds really dope. Maybe specific films, like B-sides or horror or Italian etc..

I suppose this may be an issue... funny tho', it never even occurred to me that there would be a forum dedicated to a brand of sampler - I just found this forum last October... due to looking for solutions to problems of late with my SP-808, otherwise working pretty much fine since I bought it sixteen years ago. Maybe as (potential) problems crop up with later models new ppl will follow. Anyways I'm glad/proud to be here now.

Yeh, okay... feeling this. The reverberation is still echoing tho, in my ears at least. Honestly (and i hope this ain't sacrilege to most SPF-denizens) but I'm not sure I ever heard of these guys (much less listened to them) although I count myself a hip hop fan (guess I'm just settled down in other labels, but otherwise a fairly broad history I've explored over the years).
The point I want to make is that the SP is just a tool... human-nature, I guess to emulate a sound I the last thing I want is to come across as preachy, but there's a lot of biting going on. When a sampler can take literally ANY sound, why are the same genres being raked thru year after year after year? Feels sometimes like we're stuck in an elevator between floors...

This. SO true. But I understand it. Once I got thru the hoops I felt like i deserved to be here tho'. Hope ppl aren't put off...

Making the archives the treasure-trove that they are. This is Nothing but a +ve. Get in there and dig!

Would love to see this, beginning with sound/video embedding. Aesthetics imo are simple and low-key, nothing flashy, which suits the laid-back, ego-free vibe of this place.

This. I agree.

BUT: I also think, Dingo, you were mbe being a little harsh - I been here maybe 4 or five months and I've seen the place grow and change just in that short time. Who knows how long the curve will keep up, or the pendulum swing, but just for eg. last two battles have seen a four/five-fold increase in submissions from the 4-6 entries that averaged when I just joined.

And there's new content here, soundcloud tracks, tapes, etc every day.

Content. Content and controversy. Maybe some controversy...? Collaboration works sometimes, but can kill discussion sometimes, whereas rivalry can maybe do the opposite. I have more experience with the former than the latter and prefer to be polite; just theorising ;)

One tip that worked for me, made me come back to forums in general (I'm often over at I Hate Music for my electroacoustic fix, used to live over at the old Freejazz.org, lurk out a gearslutz and a couple others, mbe spend a little time over at UGHH.com, tho for the music, not discussion..) was
Killing my FB profile. Never looked back. Broke the habit (i srsly felt like a junkie) and now a year later I can use it just to stay in the loop for gig-invites.

Long story short, all it takes is ppl to fill in these little boxes with text/content and you have a living/active forum.

Peace!

P.S. Biggest props to Chopperman! Yr. a f*king ROCK, anchorman, the guy who makes shit happen.

P.P.S. check my idea in the how-old-are-you thread..?

It's time for another tournament! And maybe we should "promote" our forums by sending our tapes, like SP World, to blogs and stuff. If we make it through maybe they'll write some nice words about the forum aswell. :)

I will say that this forum is full of the nicest people I have ever personally encountered on the internets.Im on other forums(MPC,Stones Throw,DnB,Dubstep, future producers)and I still spend most of my time here. The only thing I would like to see is even more people on this forum and using SPs.I spread the word to as many people as possible about the SP and these forums and hope that it stays around for a long time.....love you guys :)

I don't think so.. There's a huge increase in SP interest because of the fact that people want to use an affordable sampler that goes well with their DAW's and has a fairly easy learning curve in comparison to the MPC series; the dilla effect is very much still alive. The problem is most kids who pick up an SP nowadays do not have the patience to look around for answers and expect handouts from people who took the time to read the manual..

One thing I would really like to see with the forums is the chat being used. Most of the time I'll check in and it'll automatically kick the only other person off; I will only see one person checking in at a time.

+1
i have many friends, mostly ex mpc heads, ebm or indie rock heads, which at first, 3 or 4 years ago, looked at the whole "SP THING" with suspect and derision...well, now the same people got at least an SP in their studio(mostly the 404, the real best seller, or a 303...some few a 505...)...now the sp is most seen as cool "media" for live sets (the 404) or a cool fx box with punchy sound (the 303)...some of those friends didn't knew madlib before, but after i made them see the "all caps" video to show an example of the 303 sound, that was instant love...

I'd be down to host another SSPSB T.E. by the mid of february if people are interested.... same idea like the last one ... 16 players ... one-on-one with sample lottery... always enjoyed those tourneys :D

think about it - discuss it - i would put up a player selection in a week or sth so spread the word - i also might pm a few forums OG's...
i'd love to go with mega man ...
