404 for.. 120$

Post by eyh »

heyo

I have the opportunity to buy an used 404 for 120$, w/o the power supply and apparently in not so good cosmetic ( but only cosmetic ) shape. What do you think? ( btw, I can buy a 202 for 85$ instead of the SP. need your help to chose between these 2 bad boys :( )

i'm after that boom-bap/abstract hip-hop/OL SKOOL hiphop vibe ( flylo, samiyam, dibiase, baths, shlohmo, lapalux, shigeto, soosh, cashmere cat, tokimonsta, madlib, balam acab, mf doom, a bit of atcq ( not so much, but I think "jazz-hop" sounds cool lol ), etc. well, if you want to know what I'm listening to I'm on last.fm. ), do you think the 404 ( or the 202. ) could suit my needs?

You're going to get way more out of the 404 for sure... hopefully you're able to try it out first to make sure all the buttons work.

Unfortunately, I can't try it..

Well, I saw the 404 ( cant post photos right now ), and uh the guy replaced the knobs and removed the "front panel", I hope the guy who's selling it still have the original parts..

Btw it comes with a 1gb CF card. What do you think?

Nice find! Buy yourself some rechargeable batteries and go to town!!
The max memory card for the original SP404 is 1gb. If he gave you a 4gb it will not work in the OG 404.

Yeah rechargeable batteries are a great idea! or I may buy a power supply, or both lol. well if I can only use rechargeable batteries it could be great, but I think a power supply would be useful.

oh that sucks. Well I keep it anyway, we never know!

Damn the 404 is so easy to learn. Well it doesn't have a screen so it was a bit hard at first, but when you get what all the buttons do it's great! The only "con" I found is.. chopping samples!! it's so hard w/o a screen. ATM I use the 505 for sampling, chopping etc, and then I bounce my samples to the 404. i will definitely need to practice chopping

It forces you to use your ear. You gotta fine tune them spider senses.
That's a great find if everything works on it.

Music's always about your ears, not a waveform and notes drawn on a computer screen. :)
