I got one. It was very fun at first. I still like it. But...

It's hard for me to make something I like on it. Actually thinking about selling someday. I need a proper looper and even though it kinda does that with the tape, it's not really possible to export those loops. I want to set up my 404 with perfect timed loops for live shows. Here's where the problem lies for me: I like having 12 loops that I can mix and match. With the op-1, I'm stuck with 4 that are always connected. Sure, I can copy a loop several times and add different combinations but it's still pretty static. With 12 loops I can mix and match (think 12*12 basically). However to get that kind of freedom with the op-1, I need to be a meticulous planner. On top of that, the op-1 only has one tape at any given time. The 404 has ten banks!!! Ten banks of loops and patterns! The op-1 has very limited sequence saving and just one tape.

If I could get the loops out with markers so that they were perfect loops then it would be fine but it doesn't work like that. I'm planning on getting a rc-50(or 505) and that will let me export my loops and throw them on the 404. Then I'll just jam with my drum machine. I can mix and match my loops then and it will let me develop my beats over time and experiment until I find the mix and order I like.

Anyway, long ass opinion, I guess. The op-1 is perfect for some people and I think it's a killer machine. It's just all up to the users preference really.

How does it hold up as a synth? Can it make sounds that other synths cannot match? I am tempted to buy one of these things too but i dont care about the sequencer and shit like that. Every youtube video i see is just like wow a pretend reel to reel machine! I wanna know how capable it is as just a synth

It is capable of some some good synth sounds, but they're somewhere between pro and chippie...all the synth sounds are highly digital, you're not going to get a lot of good analog style stuff out of it without a lot of settings and tweaking. OP1 was meant for experimentation, even with the synths.

This. All the way.
@JBL - Using the tape as a looper has been something that quite a few users have tried to perfect but it just ain't going to work (but, maybe it has for a slim few). The 505 is a BOSS () ass looper. Very easy to use and you get five loops that don't have to be master-sync'd... polyrhythmic loops... anyone? If you can get it, I don't think you'd look back.

Ahhh, just placed an order for one. I feel guilty. I was just gonna buy an ipad mini instead. The finger sequencer sold me.

@Boo - Did you decide to jump on it?

@Jiggity - The finger sequencer is pretty cool. Combining 2+ of your patterns can lead to some strange shit since the it restarts on the 1 every time. Great sampler food.

If I had the money to get one, I'd just buy a whole bunch of vinyl instead.
Knock every item off my Discogs Wantlist. Some stuff I been on the lookout for years.

I'm perfectly fine with a turntable, a sampler and a 4 track cassette.
I just keep phening for more vinyl.

I'm glad I don't suffer from a need more gear disorder.

There's so much you can do with the OP-1 within it's limitations like the SP.

Here's the first track I made with the machine while skratching to it. The beat is made only using the "Ahhh" sample I skratch with. All kits, synth sounds, pads made with one single "Ahh" sample and OP-1, no factory sounds.

Here's the audio of just the beat. Nothing special, just was for an entry for an OP-1 comp with strict rules(use only one sound to create everything).

Been diggin this dude's all OP-1 album lately:
