I'm thinking about a SP 404

Post by slowfin »

Hey, I'm pretty new here. Since Christmas is coming up, I have a pretty wide range of stuff I can get right now. (i'm not spoiled :D ) So, I was thinking about getting some type of SP. But my eyes are pretty much locked onto the 404 at the moment since most of my favorite artists use it (e.g james matthew). But I'm not really too informed on the other SP's, and which one is more easy-going for beats, and to help you out, I'm going for a type of, ehh, aNTOJE style of type of deal. Hope that helps. Anyways, any advice would be great, I only own a MPD24 right now. (the shit sucks)

If you're new to the SP world, the 404 May have what you need, but some people here like some of the warmth and grit of their 202's/303's/505's. The 404/555 are the latest of the bunch, so their sound is brighter and more polished. There are 2 models of the 404, the other is the 404SX. As far as I recall, the only difference is the memory card storage. But the workflow and effects are pretty much the same.

If you're needing a screen to edit your chops, the 505 or 606 would be good contenders. The rest of the models will require you to just use your ears. (Including the 404's). The easiest model to use is the 202, but the memory cards are a pain to find on eBay, because you have to have the right voltage for the card(5.5 I seem to recall). It lacks a sequencer, but you could midi it to a interface and a daw if you want.

Which one you go for could depend on what you require, but if you're after the 404, you can't go wrong. But the SX has a smart media card reader, and finding memory cards for them is hella easy. The 1st gen 404's might be a eBay find, but maybe a local camera store will have the ones it needs.

What's great about any SP is anything is fair game for sampling, especially because of it's RCA jacks. Turntables, cassette decks, video games, TV sets, DJ mixers, effect units (if you need some more ways to custom your samples), it's all up to you. Enjoy, and you may find yourself wanting to own some more SP's after your 1st!

I'm just a few months into this. I bought a SP-404SX and think it's great. Coming from regular multitracking with instruments and the Session/arrangement views of Ableton Live the workflow of the SP is great fun.

The SX is fast, I have a small pile of SD-cards to swap between different projects. I use it on batteries A LOT and make beats on my lap while commuting by bus.

It might not have the grime of older models, but there are many ways to dirty up samples. Besides, a lot of people getting hooked on SPs seems to collect them. So can always buy another one for a versatile combo. I got a Zoom ST-224 Sampletrak for the dirty work.

I'd say, just get one!

Yeah man get one!The best part about SPs for me is how loose you can get your stuff to sound and how much of a groove you can get into. With software it takes a little more effort imo to get things to sound "human".Go get one...you won't be disappointed!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the 555/606 had the D Beam feature. Sorta a gimmick imho. I gave you a heads up on as much as I could think of before you spent your money. It's not really going to help with sampling, but kinda can be fun if you're rocking a crowd. (By using the filter or synth)

I jumped in more or less 100% blind - picked up a 404 and haven't looked back. I'm now considering maybe picking up either a 505 or a 606 to team up with the 404... callin' it a day. Things are too dayum fun.

an "antoje style type of deal" is made with two samplers, a good synth, a decent compressor and audacity for cuts and mix.
any machines or daws will do if they inspire you enough to.

What synthesizer were you playing around with while you were recording your LP?

<3 Critter & Guitari stuff. Cool list. Always wanted to spend more time with Blofeld.
