Hi guys. Im back here again becouse i started to use my 303 again after a long break. I bought it about 5 years ago, and i was using it on a daily basis the first 2-3 years, and then 2 years ago my daughter was born and then i didnt have much time over for that.
By now the 303 is like a arm or limb. So what i wanted to ask is if someone could suggest some unusual production techniques that i havent tried yet?
I figured this one out a while ago but it's pretty nifty and fun (fair warning that this technique is incredibly inconsistent and not something to rely on). There are two ways to do it successfully: in the box and out through the box. To do it in the box you're going to be resampling with the external source onto a new pad. The most success I've had is having a drum loop on one pad, while resampling in the external source. The important part is to have delay engaged on the external source, and to turn it off and on along with the rhythm of your drums. The trickiest part is to have the correct delay setting (a lot of the time the default works fine) but more specifically to have the external source engaged for the correct amount of time. You're going to run into situations where syncopating your press of the external source with another part of the beat simply won't sound right. To accomodate, you have to press the external source off earlier than the beat dictates. You must still turn on the external source as closely to the beat as possible (doing it through the box and not in the box kinda negates this factor). While all this might sound complicated, it's actually very simple and eye opening to how usable most sound sources are. Doing it through the box is the same concept but you're feeding the external source into another sampler/sequencer. Doing it this way will prevent glitches that would normally occur when resampling and give you editing capability. Here is an example of a beat made with this technique (in the box style) all resampled on the 303. Nothing masterful but it's a fun, fast way to create unique melodies from samples.
