How flexible is the Arena section? - need everyone's opinion

Post by MarcoGrouch »

From what I've seen there's pretty much the BBs, and the RCs.
How open would you guys be to a new kind of challenge with more strict and experimental rules? Possibly no competition or polls, just a continual challenge and if you drop heat you get props. I'm kind of thinking of one of those "make a track a week" type threads except only using foley sounds. Honestly just a stab in the dark, I have no idea if anyone except me would be interested in this thing but I guess I'll never find out if I don't ask.

EDIT: shit I just realized the first problem with this idea is that I assumed most SPs have the integrated mic [and they don't] ahh well, I'd still like people opinions on this even though it might be exclusive to 202 and 404s due to the mic and battery options

I'd be down. You mean like only field recording sounds? Because you can do that with a phone too and just record it in to your sp. For the people that don't have the shitty 404 mic haha

Yeah field recordings. No sampling music, no synths, no subsonic. Just the integrated mic and manipulation. There wouldn't be a poll or 'battle' like I mentioned in the first post, it would just be people making a track within a week, every week. I think it'd be interesting because no one would start with any samples right off the bat, and everyone's environment will change their sound in some way. If nothing else everyone who participates even only some of the time will start getting better at field recording manipulation. I'm still kind of unsure about the rules... if it would be a 1 SP only type deal or not. I'd prefer to not allow any DAWs or PC programs because they can bend any sound into almost anything. I was thinking along the lines of someone in a park with only a 404, empty pads and nothing to sample besides the area around them.I'm worried this won't be too many people's 'style' though and no one would participate.

I actually made an entire song recently using this exact method you described. It's really fun and you can get any sound you want from a simple walk around the block. I'm all for this though 100%

Yeah man I would be down for this. I've actually tried this before as well, and it was pretty rad. It really makes you think outside the box. I think you should just post a challenge and try it out, I think people will check it out.

Cool. I guess the worst that can happen is the thread bombs. I'll try to fully flesh out the rules and post it tomorrow

Haha yeah man, but there's already three of us and I think if you post it other people will probably hop on it. If not, at least we'll be learning more about our sp's in the process. I'll be sure to check it out when you post it.

guess you didn't see it but I already posted it. I was the only turnout for week 1 [pretty much what I feared, although I was afraid I wouldn't do anything either hahaha]

the more the merrier, I hope lots of people will slowly get into this and it will become a pretty strong weekly turnout... fingers crossed
