I'm jealous. Question though. I could never find a straight answer online.

Are the sounds stored into the computer or are they in the maschine and just need any computer to power on and play through?

Figured as much, but some people were implying otherwise.

I might get a used one and run it on ableton or when FL performance mode gets on point.

My options are coming down to the feel of pads now. Maschine, vs midi fighter, vs MPD series.

yeah all sounds and sampling uses and are stored on your computers hard drive and you use your usb sound card too. you dont really have to look at the cpu screen tho almost everything gets displayed on the hardware controller you only really need to use the cpu screen to slide a bum note of a performance which can better at least having that option rather than scrapping the whole take and trying over n over. or for more daw like sequencing thing...
if i was you tho and you just wanted a midi controller for other software id probably go with the korg pad kontroller or if you wanted mo features maybe the trigger finger pro with the built in step sequencer
