I'm looking for a replacement volume potentiometer too - I can't change my volume from maximum and turning the pot only results in a bit of static. The solder joints appear intact.
As a workaround, I use the "monitor" feature of my USB soundcard (http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UCA202.aspx) to listen to the soundcard's line inputs. A headphone amplifier could be used also.
