Hey, Family

My question is actually about the COMP effect. When do you find yourself using this effect and why?

I've applied this effect a few times to a hi-hat and snare and it made the samples sound a little cleaner. Is this what this effect is used for?

Every time I've messed with it, the results were horrid..never actually spent time fiddling with the COMP...I'm on an og but I'd like to see some responses to this.

i use it when I am resampling two or more drum hits as layers

so I would layer the attack from a hard snare with a down tuned 808 clap and an 808 snare with only the middle band on the isolator open… run those sounds through the compressor and adjust the knobs until it sounds right…

then resample

...of course sometimes the vinyl sim works better here

but you never know until you try

On the 404, I think the compressor works better than vinyl sim for one-shots. But vinyl sim works better to compress entire tracks.

alright, i'll make this clean once and for all.

this is how I do it

limiter ON - FONCTION+8 - TURN IT ON

then when I have a cool drum + snare + baseeline going on; i would usually turn the bassline to like 60 (volume) , i might turn the snare a bit to, then resample this whole thing WITHOUT COMP.

then I apply COMP with CTRL1 - full right / CTRL2 - depends on kick and vibe you want but usually in the left area / CTRL 3 - FULLY RIGHT.

bounce.

I like using it for pumping audio effects and when resampling drums, I like using them to make drums sound harder by first applying a light reverb to the drums, then using COMP to bring up the reverb tails, to make the drums sound like they're being slammed. It adds a really interesting hardcore texture to them.

i like to use compressor on my main sampled/chopped rhythm piece, then resample it with drums while using the CTRL3 knob to duck the rhythm section in and out, like a really ghetto sidechain.

sometimes i'll duck in and out before i add in or figure out the drums just so there's random small parts of the rhythmic loop being dipped in and out of surprisingly.

The 303/404/505 vinyl comp is great but imo not worth the slowness of those devices....404sx/555 all the way 8)
.

if something you do sucks, don't waste too much time improving it....delete the pattern/sample and move on. Nothing worse than wasting precious time on mediocre beats

Don't be afraid of adding grit/dirt with VST effects after recording (or compression/verb/delay) - or sampling noise/record crackle and adding behind everything for effect...or do it lofi with tape bouncing/VHS etc.

Get an MV8800 and never look back - but keep your SPs to be sequenced by it.

CTRL 1 right, CTRL 2 left, CTRL 3 right. bounce. microwave stylee

im working on getting more antiquated with the COMP because i only ever use it for mixdowns like above.
