This is awesome. Did they do it on SPs?

i know it should be straigh forward, I just cant get a handle on it, ive been meaning to learn for almost a decade. :(

just try to figure how the measures work, it's essentialiy that, i mean the measures in relation with the tempo...you can do fine pad/samples level changemnts, or pad/samples lenght changes or positioning/adjustements with that...once you got this, the rest is just numbers
just take your time, just a bit, and you'll find the way...any problems , hit me up

sorry for my english, i meant the numbers instead of measures

cool , thanks for the support, I will have a sitdown with the 606 tonight with the goal of programming an Amen on the 606.

I also want to program velocity rolls, like classic breaks have.

like 'put your hand in the hand' type rolls.

after doin that, try also the mute groups an mute them between different tracks: i use to do that to play mute groups live between them, like this; like chops that mute/trigger each other with the muting/unmuting of the different tracks...i've found this way confortable for me to do wild live amen breaks...plus some rolls, obviously...
ps
sometimes i also use rolls to, regarding the quantise, write more rapdly the amens on tracks, seen that you cannot resample them on the 606 (thanks roland  ) i do that...

For example of how dnb can sound...check out my track (which was first round to getting the trophy you see by my name. :D)

Ness - Round 1

Also, here's some a live dnb track for another battle:

DnB is completely possible on SP404.

Ha! Dude the 505/606 microscope's not too hard once you get around how abstract it is. It's a bit of maths, so if you understand fractions you'll pick it up quick enough.

The fundamentals:
- the sequencer plays at 96 parts per quarter note (96ppq)
- the range of values for each bar is 00-95
- Position = start point of a sample, Gate = end point
- as 00 is the minimum & 95 is the maximum, 48 is halfway (half a bar)
- the gate also works at 96ppq, this is only important when the sample being played is set to gate mode (in Func+13). This will be the position where a note stops playing

Reading note values (the nerdy shit, 'X' being any number):
- a position value of 0X-02-00 is the 2nd beat (quarter note) of a 4/4 bar
- 0X-0X-48 is an 8th note
- a gate time of 48 will give an 8th note length
- halve the distance between 8th notes to get 16ths
- 0X-0X-24, 0X-0X-48, 0X-0X-72 are 16th notes
- a gate time of 24 will give a 16th note length
- halve the distance between 16ths notes to get 32nds
- 0X-0X-12, 0X-0X-24, 0X-0X-36, 0X-0X-48, 0X-0X-60, 0X-0X-72, 0X-0X-84 are 32nd notes
- a gate time of 12 will give a 32nd note length
- 0X-0X-32, 0X-0X-64 are 12th notes
- a gate time of 32 will give a 12th note length
- halve the distance between 12th notes to get 24ths
- 0X-0X-16, 0X-0X-32, 0X-0X-48, 0X-0X-64 & 0X-0X-80 are 24th notes
- a gate time of 16 will give a 24th note length

To help break thinking like a grid, try:
- varying position starts & gate times for different length notes (ie- have a quarter length note start at a 16th note position)
- adjust the note start/end values by 1 to 3 or so units either side of the intended note's position, this will de-quantize the pattern

To jungle that amen, chop down 2 bars into 8th notes across one pad bank. Make each chop real tight & part of the same mute group. Then sequence using the step note recorder, put the step time down to 1/8 or 1/16 (remember to use the rest/F2 key between each 1/16 note). When it comes to sequencing chopped breaks that's waaay easier than playing it in live, but with some practice you'll be able to play in your breaks live.

^All that clear?

Oi Ellaguru, I'm jealous of you being able to watch the 505's microscope during playback. Does it act like a tracker or do you need to move the highlighted note manually?

If you really need a 9th mute group, you can use the sequncer as a workaround. Just set all the pads for the 9th group to gate (with no mute groups active). Next carefully sequence it so that each pad ends as the next one plays. Easy! Now if only the 606 could play more than 8 voices...

2nding Hseiken about 404 being fine for D'n'B. Its a genre invented on samplers so there's no reason why an SP can't do it. As he said, try coupling the 404 with an external sequencer/DAW/MPC as a workaround for multitrack, mute group, roll & velocity.

yes i can hear the pattern playing while i'm in microscope mode, but it doesn't act like a tracker (nothing is moving), you move notes manually, like on the 606; the only real trouble with 505 microscope is that you hear every track playing, so if you want to focus on one in particular you have to low every pads level of that track, but if you using the same samples for 2 or more tracks this became annoying...there are workarounds (copying same samples to different pads then deleting once you have finished writing the pattern, and changing pads/notes on the microscope...but thats a bit frustrating)
ps
hey that was really what i meant (and what i do), you microscope lesson was great! (i usually do the same with my mc909, i learn that technique from it)

thanks for the tutorial, but im still confused about how complicated this is, so i'll stop whining and sit down and learn it :)

one thing i noticed, is a regular hiphop beat not the swingy kind but the reqular rock pop hiphop beat, when you double the speed with pitch, or sequencer you get a jungly D n B feel quickly. also some breaks.. (not all of them) when you speed it up, to about double you get the drum and bass amen feel too ! so thanks again, and maybe tonight I'll finally try and program an amen, or 'train' beat with microscope, I dont care about gating my drums, I think mute groups should be enough for what I need to do. maybe play with mute groups across different tracks and then mute the tracks manually too. to get ultra variation.

cool. I'll use this thread as my microscope bible for now.

word. peace
