I dont have one of those jobs that I can get away with workibg on music while at work.
I'm a cook. So it's not like I can bring my sampler in and punch out a beat on the line while cooking a steak.

I was working on a bassline to go with this smooth loop I had going. But I needed to adjust the pitch to get it to line up right in time.
I looked up at the clock and to my surprise I had to start getting ready to head out to work. Fuck!

Has your day (or night) job interrupted yoyr creative process?
How do you overcome it?

this happens to me all the time. sometimes, people are talking to me and i'll nod and look like i'm listening, but i'm thinking about loops. there's never enough time sometimes...

but my job isn't close to as stressful as kitchen work. i'd be the guy getting fired for burning everything cause i was zoning out!

I work at the movies and I always think of bringing my sp with me when I clean the cinemas so I can sample the credit soundtracks haha. But when I am at home kicking back making some tunes my girlfriend always comes over as a "surprise" and I can never make beats its really frustrating.

Has anyone ever called in sick for the purpose of staying working on music?

No, but I have made beats all day when I was actually sick and should've been resting, causing me to stay sick longer. The beats were ill, though!

I’m not the kind of cat that brings my mp3 player and headphones out with me, I didn't really care about other people who do it, i think it looks real styling. but sometimes it bugs me when someones Waring ear buds and you try to talk to them and they don't answer you, then you wonder if there ignoring you. so that's the only part that bugs me about mp3 players.

anyway, when I worked sandbags, I learned to compartmentalize my mind, into sections. make sand bags fast and steady. think about music, digging, and how I'm gonna get a girl friend.

so maybe you can make a section in your mind to meditate about music so the work isn't draining you. this works better for robotic jobs where you don't have to think to much. When you have a job that burns you out physically and mentally you should get payed more I think. When I look at the employees at McDonald’s scrambling around like slaves getting shit on by their bosses, making fuck all going home tired and stinky, you really appreciate your mcdouble a little more.

This other job I had was tele-surveys. When I first started there was a strict NO ANYTHING policy, until I kept getting busted doodling on a notepad. a couple weeks later they changed the rules and handed out colouring books and crayons to the employees , and let you doodle and even talk to your neighbour between calls. I filled an entire note book a week working there with rhymes and sketches. and still made quota for surveys.

Being tired SUCKS. waking up, working on music, looking at the clock, going to work tired, coming home hungry with no food, back to work on music, that can cause a little stress. that's when you might need to balance your music/work a bit better, and work usually takes priority when you got bills and gear to buy.

aNyway, I think it might help if you don't look at work like being a slave, and if your not required to use your full mental capacity, try and learn to internally meditate and speed up time, try t0 slow down time when ur on your own time. even though time is supposed to go faster when your having fun.
