does a machine like this exist?

i tried searching but im not sure exactly what to type in
but is there a machine that is a keyboard and you can load 1 or more samples into it and it spaces them out chromatically? i understand also this might be a really stupid question. but anybody?

yes.
your best bet in a sp would be a sp-505, but that might be limited for you. many keyboards do this. none that i own.

the motif, fantom, asr, emax, s1000, s2800 and the list goes on.

You should look for rack samplers, like the akai s2800. They are built to do exactly what you want to do right there.

You'll have to control it with a sequencer with midi out though.

Thats a different thing to what OP is asking about...

There should be a few keyboards that will do this, all old though, nothing new really I dont think. I think theres some akai ones, e-mu, possibly some other companies..

I cant tell you of any specifically, but yep they existed.

basically just about ne sampling keyboard will let u do this aswell as most rack samplers and a few others like the zoom sampletrak and the SP-505...although those do it a little more limited. I use an Ensoniq EPS to do this. Works and sounds great.

1. so what is the diff bt timbral and chromatic?
2. does the sampletrack do this pretty well? cu z i get one for about a bill, is it worth it?

the term multitimbral is usually used with regards to synthesisers,

a multitimbral synthesiser can have more than oen synth patch running at a time, either layered on the same channel, or split, each being controlled by a different midi channel / section of the keyboard. So essentially its like having more than one instance of a synthesiser in the same box, one instance could be running a bass sound, one couldbe a pad or a lead, etc etc, depending on how many timbres the box can handle at once.

Chromatic sample playing is to do with playing a sample back at various pitches (usually in semitones), so that it can be played on a piano keyboard

the zoom sampletrak looks pretty easy to use and possibly cheap, do you have one? how is the time stretch? it can put a sample in 3 different pitches is that right

the ensoniq does look like pretty much what im talking about though, is it hard to find the cards needed for storage?

There's lots of ways to dp that, but you could take your 404 and load some notes that you have sampled and chromatically pitch shifted and then use a midi controller keyboard to play it.

I had a sampletrak for a few months. borrowd it. The time stretch on it is pretty dope. one of the best ive heard. Alot better than the 404s. It can pitch the samples +/-100% in small increments as well as whole values. But, what it does thats fresh is u can get 1 samples and create a major scale with it over the 8 bads on one of the banks.

I've also heard this chromatic sampling referred to as "mapping" - as in, the sampler maps the sample across the full 88 keys, accessed by an external midi keyboard. donno if that helps.

yeah i might try to pick one up then. it almost looks like the 2nd easiest sampler to use

Pick a sampletrack if you can,this sampler is mad dope!!Like my man Frantic said the timestretch is excellent,there's the scale function and you can also resample your patterns which can overcome the polyphony issue.It's really fun to use and with a Sp series sampler,that's a great tag team!
