I was playing some new beats at my friend's house. I had my phone plugged into his sound system, but the lo's sounded distorted because one of his speakers was blown.
It sounded dope to me.

I was wondering if anyone had a trick of the trade to get a kick to sound like it was coming out a blown speaker?

My first thought (besides simply recording his speaker or blowing one from a thrift store etc.) would be to run the kick through any amp sim software, overdrive, etc to get the broken up sound (by overdriving the inputs). In the SP you can resample the kick with EQ all boosted and run it through other effects. Adjust the internal processing levels of the SP to lower your headroom and things will break up easier.

Also you could run signal into boom box or other small speaker system, record it and could sound huge. Some of Led Zepplins biggest guitar sounds came from small amps. :)

I have an idea that might get the sound. If not, it would still have a cool effect.

So, find a stale kick sample. Then run the sampler through my EQ and record into Fruity Loops.
Play one hits of the kick into EQ, recording shots of one band each, with all the rest having negative drop outs.
Then test different layer pairings together in FL Studio.
Resample into SampleTrak with Distortion effect toggled.

just mic the the blown speaker, youll get the same sort of sound,
use a condensor with low gain 4 inches from the speaker.

or a dynamic with medium or high gain at 4 to 6 inches.

some of my kicks samples sound like a blown speaker sometimes. :( even when i try to make good kicks.

i've gotten that type of sound from the POP at the beginning of some records, when i put the needle down, or it just catches the groove. this also happens at the end sometimes, if you have the type of turntable that just keeps playing the record.

you could try that with some records, or just put it on your mind and then you'll notice it when it happens eventually. stretch or pitch down, and you're in business.

oh, and the staticy, non bass clicks that you get this way can be made into snares or high hats.

maybe a cool idea would be to hold the mic closer to the ripped foam on the speaker, to capture that authentic blown speaker riffle .

for more dept use 2 mics , one a bit further back, to capture and reprdouce a more fully and detailed blown speaker sample effect.

my instant thought was that you could try boosting the lows of your kick massively then slamming it to tape. it might not sound exactly the same but at least the distortion would be sweet

you could make two samples of the kick. one with the lows boosted and the highs taken out and another the opposite way. then you could add shit tons of distortion, bit redux, or similar effects just to the top end. resample them together. then your bottom end of the kick is still knocking for the sub and your high end sounds like it's breaking up. havent tried this yet, but it seems like it would work.
