Sp-404 and multitrack (Tascam Dp-03) question...

Post by FiYo »

What's up guys, I'm new to the forum. :D

My question might come off as "noob-ish" (cuz I am one, lol), but I recently just received my sp-404sx and my tascam dp-03 multitrack recorder the other day, and I'ved owned the og 404, so I'm pretty familiar with the sp-404 products, and I used to record into my shitty laptop which was cool, but not the most ideal for me... so I when I have audio coming in the tascam recorder from the sp, it only plays and records as Mono... which sucks cuz I have loops and samples that originally pan left and right and were stereo sounds, but I'm not receiving that. Is there a way that I can play and record stereo sounds as they would've originally come off my sp, like it does/did with my laptop?? I read the manual, but it doesn't seem to answer my question. Is my setup wrong? I have an rca to 3.5 mm (inside a 3.5mm to 1/4 adapter) cable running from the line out that is plugged in the line b port.

Looks like the unit can only record 2 mono signals at a time. You are currently sending a stereo signal to a mono input. Think of it as an 8 track mono recorder or 4 track stereo recorder. You do have the stereo master track you can mix down to.

You will need to use 2 tracks and run the 2 channels from the SP to the 2 inputs on the Tascam. Each "pair" of tracks you record to on the Tascam will have to be panned hard left and right to create the same stereo field you hear on the SP.

SP-202 (SOLD), SP-303 (SOLD), SP-404SX (main one I useD- killed w wrong PSU!), SP-505 (still have it!), SP-555 (SOLD), ES-1 (SOLD), ESX-1 (SOLD), RS7000, etc.

Thanks for the reply, Om_Audio! Hmm, I see. Do you know of anything else hardware-related that I can record just straight-up stereo signals in using nothing but rca cables?... or at least has the option of doing so without having to record like U mentioned on the tascam?

You already own the Tascam- you could just get these and go RCA from SP to the adapters into the Tascam-

http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-Cable-GPR101 ... B000068O3S

Or are you looking to return the Tascam?

Your unit is like 10 years old- newer one here is smaller but has 2 mono/stereo selectable tracks-

http://www.amazon.com/DP-006-Portastudi ... k+recorder

I am sure there are other options. I would email Korg, Tascam, Fostex, and Roland and ask them to tell you what digital recorders they offer that can record stereo tracks natively.

I'll give the adapters a shot, and if it doesn't do what I'm trying to get it to do, I'll return or sell it for something else. But, thanks for the info, bro! I appreciate it. See ya round the forum-verse.

If you do not need multi track there are many options. Zoom has quite a few. I had the Zoom H1 did a great job. Simple stereo RCA to 1/8" stereo cable all that is needed. And you can plug it in USB to computer and use it as a recording interface using the mics or the line in.

After buying a couple of rca jack to 1/4 adapters, and following the procedure u mentioned earlier, I finally managed to get it to work! Thanks! I'm such a happy camper right now. :D
