The question is not whether the 404 can do this, the question is can YOU do it, after all the 404, not unlike an MPC, is as good as its operator.

wondering how many actually are doing this on an sp404-or 606 in performance. am assuming you would set up some basic pattern to play in bground (hats) and then rock all over it?

or are people really doing the lot - hats, kicks, snares, toms, crashes, kitchen sinks, freestyle?

I thought mpc was velocity sensitive (?) to get this accuracy you would re-sample same hits at different levels to get some variation on sp404?

i have been using my sp-404 a bit like that.. Me and a drummer has a band called Indestructible were i play microkorg, sampler(live.. in studio i play guitar and bass and everything) so what i do is using my sp-404 as a sound module.. after doing this for a time i discovvered fortet(or what his name was) wich does the same thing.. but i use it a bit more musically i think..

Gonna work up my padskills so i can do some freestyle shit to with drums and all...

its wery fun anyway!

Yeah we tend to have backing beats playing and rock with unusual-sounding samples over the top. Vocal snippets work great in a club environment (especially the really old, 1980s 'cheesy' samples!) as you can really go to town with the filter and effects while you are bashing away on the pads.

One trick that I like to do is chop up a well-known vocal phrase and play the words in random, rythmic orders in realtime while controlling the filter with the other hand...

Vocal samples and FX work great for this task as they actually sound better when the timing is a bit odd - it makes the whole shebang sound a lot more 'live'..
