I used to just have a turntable, some vinyl, a 303, and a tascam 4 track. For some reason I had to go complicate things (like always)…

Now I have;

303
404
224 ST (arriving tuesday)
Microkorg
and instead of recording to the 4 track, it's Pro Tools 11 now.

All these are plugged into my Ashly mx508 mixer. (8 Channel line mixer) I can play all of them at once across every channel, I don't have to plug & un-plug everything all the time, I have outboard EQ with sweepable mid across every channel, etc. Everything sounds great.

At some point, I want to track out my beats. I'm trying to figure out with the equipment I have, what the best possible way would be. I use the Re-Sample method when I make my beats on the 303/404. Sometimes I'll do the 40 bpm/99 bar/no Quantize in the Pattern Sequencer. It seems like it should be almost exactly the same as Re-Sample, except I could use mfx22 (404) or the Isolator to mute/fade in & out pads, which would help me track out. I just usually stay with strictly re-sample though. I've never tracked out a beat I've made on an SP. I'll record the whole performance live to a pad (then add effects) or live straight into Protools.

I just started making beats and I know nothing at all. I've just been telling myself to worry about getting better and making good songs before I worry about making it sound exactly like I want. I love the Lo-Fi, and I love the quickness and simplicity of the SP's. Just last week I almost bought a Roland Mv8000 on 3 different occasions for dirt cheap, but passed it up every time. I would have only bought it just to be able to track out my beats. I had an MPC once and we just didn't vibe the way me and the SP do. That Sampletrak seems right up my alley though. It also seems a lot easier to possibly track out than the SP 303/404 would.

I have to be missing some possibilities with my setup. I could run Drums just from my 303, samples from my 404, bass lines/ synth from my microkorg.. How do I keep all that in sync though without Midi? My Duet doesn't have Midi. I just figured there's something I'm missing here and with 3 samplers and the equipment I have. There should be a possible workflow with the ability to track out if I wanted to, especially once I add the SampleTrak to the mix on tuesday. So what am I missing here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I'd say if you wanna use pro tools maybe don't worry about getting it all running together at the same time. Record separate tracks into pro tools and use it to sequence, you can still use your samplers to work out your chops/structures. But it sounds like you really enjoy the resample method, maybe close your laptop and don't worry about it for a bit. I've been in that place before where I want everything running together like a massive fucking battle station but in the end worked out everything has its use, you just might not use all your gear all the time. Was a little confused by the question but i think i know where you're coming from :-)
