(what the?) METAPHYSICS in MUSIC

Post by Krisso The Great »

OK ..

from what I understand music pre 90's/80's had no screens included in the production ( or should I say on a mass scale)

now compare your experience using a sampler such as 303 or 404 with no screen .. is it more spiritual/creative/human? compared to hooking a MiDi into a PC?

don't confuse it .. most of modern music includes computers and screens .. and ere is great music being made using the popular medium

..however is it the cause of a lack of "soul" or "feel" ? trading practise of playing an instrument to genius level for synchronised perfection?

..the Beatles had no screens .. James Brown had no DAW .. Sun Ra had no MiDi keyboard ..

fuck (smoke screens) .. I'm sticking with the metaphysics of intuition .. fuck screen hopping and menu diving ..

Devon .. Get the table!

I think it's a multitude of factors.

Using your eyes to make music affects decisions, there is no way around it. But I don't think it actually affects the "soul" of music because the end user still makes the decision. If you are aware of your tendencies and you experiment....you can get any sound you want.

I could "survive" going back to virtually all tactile beatmaking out of necessity, but I'd never want to. Hybrid approach done right is the way to go, IMO. Even dudes in Hip Hop that worked solely on a hardware workstation grew comfy and worked that microwaved template style. A legend like Primo!

I think there is perfection in imperfection. For me, using a modern DAW, I go through a few extra steps to make sure I put the "shitty" back in my music. The headroom and signal-to-noise ratios on modern equipment have made it possible to record cleaner from your bedroom than in professional studios 25-30 years.

I'm all about keeping it ugly. What cats on some of the other forums consider "lo-fi" or "dirty" is laughable.

Yeah, I like playing it by ear.
Don't need no computer screens.
I think it's crazy how on the listening side, the audience is more compelled to "watch" music through video, rather than listening via radio.
MTV in the 80s/90s started a whole culture and dictated what you needed to be listening to. (Now it's just teen moms and Jersey Shore).
YouTube is the biggest source to find new music. So now I got to up my game and make videos to go along with my sounds.
