okay, typically when I track out to ableton I track out the entire beat but I was wondering how to go about tracking individual parts of the beat for full editing capabilities (bass,hi hat,kick,snare,sample...etc) anyone have experience in this?

do I need any other equipment besides what's listed below to accomplish this ??

404, turntable, ableton, focusrite audio interface

you can sample all your parts into ableton live then re arrange on ableton live.

or

you could just get it as close as you can on the sp and record to ableton live and use the EQ to tweak to your liking.

seems like the 1st option would take forever to do...I'm probably better off with option 2

thanks for the input

that brings me to ask another question...for example if samiyam/dibia$e made a track on the 404 and tracked the entire beat out to a daw how do this guys get these beats mixed/mastered.....because when I listen to their beats they sound somewhat mixed/mastered

I dont know what you need the VST for but just record your tracks into ableton. Simple as that. Most tracks are just loops so just record those loops into ableton, gotta volume down other parts to single out the parts you want to record, then just do it in the simpliest way possible. It seems like you have a general idea of how to go about doing it, you just havent done it yet. No magic involved or secret tips, just patience. Beware that once you do separate everything, you have all those tracks to master where as, the simplicity of the 404 makes for good sound and compression. I went down that road for the first time a few years back and now im stuck feeling like everything needs its own track and forgetting about the good ol days of "its good when it sounds good". Beware, mwahahahahah, this may be the first day of the rest of your life!

hahaha thanks for the reply spring..I think I definitely think too much when it comes to making music.. "it's good when it sounds good" couldn't of said it better myself

I think it's a good idea that I take this same approach instead of trying to generalize every little idea I get in my head, and focus on what's more important, which is just making music and having fun while doing so!

After awhile, you get a pretty good sense of how you want your shit to sound so you do the mixing while you're creating on the fly. When you track it out you can add things like EQ, compression, tape emulators, reverb, or other fx or processors in the mix.

Usually if the composition and arrangement is good, I doubt many people care if the mixing/mastering is less than "perfect."

There is no one way to do things. I'm sure samiyam and dibiase have their own ways of doing things so you just gotta experiment and figure what's best for you. Some people have long and tedious processes which involve re routing audio and shit to get what they want, others just record, export, and move on.

thanks for the reply andy, yo I watched one of your beats on youtube(dope shit btw) and it looks like your resampling entire patterns instead of doing the flying lotus pattern copy method on your 303...maybe i'm wrong ?

judging from what samiyam has said on a couple youtube videos, i really don't think he is tracking out individual instruments in a daw. probably just a two-track into ableton and getting that mastered by daddy kev or whoever. could be wrong though, he never said that explicitly..

What do you mean with 'just a two track' in ableton?

like splitting the drums on one track and the rest of the sounds on another. Or do you mean two track as in recording a loop or pattern into one stereo channel?

I have seen the video where he said "I need the computer to get the tracks out onto"

I agree with you though I don't think his method of tracking out is nothing too complicated...like you said he probably gets somebody to do the final mix

'two-track' is just industry speak for not separating any instruments. its one stereo track--left channel is track one, right channel is track two. this is how madlib gives engineers (dave cooley) beats so they can't mess with his mixes. and yeah the samiyam interview i was referencing was the louis den behind closed doors (bcd3) video
