When u sample a part of record to chop up do u always look for a loop or just sample a portion of the record for chopping up? (hope that made sense).
I ask this because i am abit puzzled about the tempo of a sample. For example, if i sample say a guitar part of a record for just chopping into phrases that i will play back to the beat do i have to bother working out the correct tempo of the record?

well, I do both. usually I look for single notes or short riffs. sometimes I make short quarter note-whole note loops. sometimes I will get just a few milliseconds of a sample and make a sustained note from it. Theres lots of stuff u can do. If you want to know the tempo of your sample the SP will tell u. just sample a 1-4 bar measure and make sure it loops right (no skips or pops) if its looping right, the SP will give u the correct BPM for it.

hey mans. not totally sure i understand you, but lemme know if this helps:

i find a drum bit that i like in a track. usually a loop. i sample that. i then sample little bits of the same loop - so like the snare, hats, kick. i use these to layer and change up the loop.

often i will then sample another part of the same song - so find a bit w/out the drum that i like, and pull that in. the reason? it will be in the same tempo, time, key and such.

you can often take a track (lets say its an old r&b track) and find enough for a full rework - so a couple of drum parts, some stabs (say, horns, or vox or whatev) and some sonic weirdness, which you can combine into a new thing. all in the same track. its about 'hearing' the song differently.

in this way, you don't really need to work out the bpm of the track. if yr gonna sample the guitar of one track and run it over a beat you've already got, you are probably better off to just trigger the pad in time.

again - donno if i totally follow what yr asking, but i hope this helps.

I nkow you said you had this covered but usually i take a day and just sample records like crazy then go back and chop them and organize them. If i need to find a bpm or a way to get nice chops i load up a daw and use the time stretch or elastik audio ( depending on the daw you use ) and drag the time line out untill i get it to fit into a 2 or 4 bar loop. ( or 1 or 16 or whatever just a even number that will work with a 4/4 time sig ) Then the daw will set the bpm and i can safely chop the sample on the right areas. I also use this to get the bpm and usually just add it into the sample name if i dont already have it say like ThumpyBassLine96 or something.
