SP Resample Challenge #9 - "A Walk In The Woods"

Post by Om_Audio »

Hey guys,

I recorded the source material on my Android phone on a night hike last night. There are coyotes making kills, footsteps, gravel, foot bridges, etc. I normalized it all which adds a lot of noise to some spots so tough material at times but I know you guys can make some rad shit happen with this!

There are 2 .wav files PRIMARY and OPTIONAL
Source materials:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/f81beh6ts0ak297/HlErEoBZlh

Rules:

- You must utilize from PRIMARY (it is an edited together collection of sounds as is OPTIONAL so just know that- you might miss a moment you like if you skip through). No outside sounds allowed of course.
- Use only 1 SP and source material provided.
- I know we all have to dump into DAW to get online but keep it simple. I usually use a master compressor on the whole track or whatever- would prefer not to have folks automatig EQ and such in DAW- keep with the spirit of the RChallenges and make it happen in one box.
- End date and voting are flexible- the RC are not as popular so I would prefer to let it run for awhile and see where everyone is at in 2 weeks on Feb8th. If we don't have enough entries or folks want more time we can let it run until Feb 8th 2028. ;) I almost think the RC should run for a month as default.
- Most importantlly- Have FUN!!!
:)

Regards,
Clifford

Great job! I feel like I am at a native American ceremony on peyote. Took me awhile to figure the coyotes were playing the whole time! :)

"Topanga is the name given to the area by the Native American indigenous Tongva tribe,[6] and may mean "a place above". It was the western border of their territory, abutting the Chumash tribe that occupied the coast from Malibu northwards. Bedrock mortars can be found carved into rock outcroppings in many locations.
Topanga was first settled by Europeans in 1839.[7] In the 1920s, Topanga Canyon became a weekend getaway for Hollywood stars with several cottages built for that purpose. The rolling hills and ample vegetation served to provide both privacy and attractive surroundings for the rich and famous.
During the 1960s, Topanga Canyon became a magnet to many new artists. In 1965 Wallace Berman settled in the area. For a time, Neil Young lived in Topanga, first living with producer David Briggs then later buying his own house. He would record most of his After the Gold Rush album in his basement studio in 1970. Charles Manson had previously been living in Topanga, where he had briefly befriended both Neil Young and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Members of "Manson's family" began their campaign of murder on July 31, 1969 with the murder of Topanga resident Gary Hinman, a music teacher who had opened his home to anyone needing shelter.
The Topanga Corral was a nightclub that featured an eclectic mix of performers, including then Topanga locals Canned Heat, Spirit, Little Feat, Spanky and Our Gang, Taj Mahal, Emmylou Harris, Etta James, Windance, Neil Young, and Crazy Horse, Geronimo Black, and many others. It is rumored that Jim Morrison was inspired to write "Roadhouse Blues" about the drive up Topanga Canyon Boulevard to The Corral. Later in the 1970s, after being destroyed by fire and rebuilt, the club featured many up and coming bands from the L.A. punk scene. In 1986, the Corral again burned to the ground and was not rebuilt. Today, many musicians, artists and actors continue to make Topanga their home."

Why do you need the Fostex, you cannot record sequences or resample in the 606? I have a ZoomH1 that does a great job and also can act as an audio interface to a computer. Ant it is tiny and runs on a single AA battery! :)

I don´t need it, a walkman could do the job, I simply like it. :) :)
Don´t know, it was my dads he gave it to me and I work with it. I like the sound it creates, I even like the sound I makes when its switched on, it has somehow I nostalgic feel... But yes its not very handy to carry around.

I was under the wrong impression you want a 404 to replace the recorder for some reason. I love gear that feels good in diff ways as you describe!

Just a reminder- this challenge is still on- so grab the samples and make some magic happen!

We have 3 entries so far-

I know the resample challenges are not as popular as the battles but these are super fun if you have not tried one yet do it- you will learn something new I am sure!

Hey, I just saw this post this morning so I threw together something really quick in hopes of making it on time. maybe i just missed it :?
anyways, I used all 3 samples and tapped on the internal mic and resampled that so I'm not sure if that's allowed or not but I assumed it was since it was just the sp 404's mic. Sorry for breaking the rules if I did but here's my entry :)

Hey just wondering if someone can tell me what the rules are for the resample challenges. I only see rules for the beat battles so I'm not sure what the difference is. Thanks.

Resample challenges are simple- you can only use the audio material provided and you can only use 1 SP- period.

In addition, previous winners tend to submit audio material that is not conventional. Past challenges have included the sound of someone washing dishes, the sound of a dial up modem, and most recently the sounds of me walking at night on a hike.

Making rhythms, textures, tones, etc. tends to require you to resample a lot because the source audio has no drums or musical content (generally) so you have to make it yourself. There are many cases where people do not resample much and just chop and arrange etc. It is much more of a challenge than a battle- I love them!

I actually might make another from the washing dishes one (Chopperman) because I had 3 or 4 cool ass beats that I chopped directly out of the material but they were in different time sig and rhythms and were especially hard to make work together on the 404SX I usually use. I tend to shy away from the time stretching on the 404SX because it sucks, basically. :)

Grab an SP and try it- I have to check but you could still enter this one as we only have 3 entries and I think we are going to let them run for a month.
