There's actually a couple of really good reasons to use the VST instead of the real thing. First is recall. There is no way to recall the settings on the 101 when it is powered down. You can take a photo of the settings but even then it never sounds quite the same. Of course you can sample it, but then it sounds static (therefore defeating the purpose of using it).
With the VSTi, while it may not sound as good overall, it sounds fine in the mix, and more importantly it's predicatable!
The second reason is simplicity. There's no way to connect the 101 to anything really (I don't have any archaic cv stuff), so if you do want to use it in the mix, there's a fair bit of stuffing around to get it done. And the end result is not THAT much better. Basically anyone who really picks it out
in the mix needs to get out more
The real thing is really more of a tasty show-piece than a really useful studio tool. On stage is another matter, but I'm not playing live anymore - and if I go back into the club scene it'll be just me, decks and the 606
soz jbl - your Q: no, I wouldn't put myself through the pain of trying to control the VSTi with the 606 - way more trouble than it's worth
