The Next SP: What features do you want?
Do you think Roland/BOSS will release another SP? (Or another sampler in the near future, NAMM 2014?)
If so, what features do you want in it?

Re: The Next SP: What features do you want?
First off, I know what I don't want it to copy or try to be. NI's Machine, or Akai's Renneisance. If people want those features, they should just buy those. But if Roland tries to copy those features to make their version, I will be highly dissapointed. Not all of us use computers, and it just isn't the same as a sp.
With that off my chest, I'd like to see:
Multiple outs-Not just RCA, but 1/4" as well. It'd be nice to be able to have certain pads push audio out certain outs, while the others might go into a owner's other filter unit, compressor, etc.
3 Effects at once! C'mon, who wouldn't want to have 3 effects at once. If Electribes EMX/ESX can do it, surely Roland can. It might require some routing buttons on a lcd, but that shouldn't be a problem.
USB in/out. The usb out can go to anybody's DAW/Laptop/iPad/phone, but hooking up a USB in might allow us to connect a HD, or a cd-burner for waaaaaay more data storage. (Kind of how samplers use to use SCSI)
No D-beam. It's corny, it's been done, and overdone, and I doubt most users ever used it.
That's all I can think of.

Hardware samplers have mostly gone the way of the dinosaur since software's rise to prominence.
IMO if there were ever to be a new SP it would probably just be a controller.
But I would love something semi-primitive like a 303 with a better sequencer and updated effects. If my 303 had even half the sequencing power my 4000 then I would probably just make music exclusively on the 303.

real pitch, resampling sequences, resampling between banks (303/505...404(?)),2fx simultaneously(606),sequencer/microscope editing as for 505/606, battery+mic(202/404 and 555-mic-), looper fx (404/555), faders (808)...damn, maybe i'm describing a sort of mc909 with steroids...and yes! the A/D converters of the 303!

True pitch tuning
Resample pattens
Resample with external source
Mute group
Multi fx
Usb
16 pads
Keep mark
Better time strech
Midi in and out
Same fast interface as 404
Volume evelopes
Forwards backwards looping
10 dbeams

real pitch, some sort of mode for making layering/resampling easier. basic envelope control of sounds, mute groups, automation of fx, basic sidechain compression, and a jog wheel to make it easier to do start/end points rather than twisting a knob a million times. I'd want it to be portable and usb stick compatible
oh and i'd want it to be able to store BPM

Re: The Next SP: What features do you want?
I'm thinking something along the lines of a mini sp101
4 tracks
16 pads
16 poly per track
4 mute groups
Pan per pad
Pitch
XoX style option (electribe) for step sequencing
SP505 style LCD
Mark button
Li ion recharable battery
USB in/out
Midi in/out
Samples to wav for drag n drop goodness
All plastic casing
Flush mount encoders
RCA inputs that don't break
Ext input during resample
Resample patterns
16 poly resample limit
Metronome on demand
Non-janky loop capture
It would ultimately be a revamped yamaha su10 with some Roland flavor. It needs to be half the size of the 404/303/202.

Re: The Next SP: What features do you want?
My next SP will be my third 404.
Re: The Next SP: What features do you want?
i think sp samplers has everything is needed to make their job, a machine with tons of extra features would be an expensive flop imo, too much competitors at the moment...
personally i'd be happy with a new edition of the 303 with 12 pads and a good rechargeable battery + a decent built-in mic.

Adding pitch, more polyphony and an attack and decay function. That plus what's quoted and I'm sold in no time. I wouldn't need anything besides that thing. I'd call it the SP 333.

Take the 505 then do the following:
SD card support
Expand sample memory
Faster interface
Turntable style pitching
Add 2 track to sequencer but make them audio tracks, not sequencers
BPM memory
Non-destructive beat slicing
Update effects
Done. Perfect groove box.

505 is perfect, just add extra 4 parts for sequencer and 8 outs, BOOM!

Re: The Next SP: What features do you want?
It would be cool if it was similar to the renaissance in that it could emulate the sound of the 303 or the 202 like how the ren can simulate the sp1200 and the mp60. Let's hope it isn't exclusively a software controller, that would really be bogus. Flip screen would be pretty tight
.
