I'm just wondering.. how much do sp-505's sell for these days?

I think anything between 250$ and 400$ are reasonable second hand prices, but I've only seen them go for about 300$ .. 350$..

got it last year off the ebay for $270 + $30 for shipping. never looked back. sorry to say but currently 404 is collecting dust besides my 505 and mpc. i am one of those producers who likes some space to unleash their creative ideas.

dunno maybe, but the unit was unexpectedly creative. i was sampling and chopping in no time. yeah it is slow when it comes to normalizing and importing wav files (thats why i always sample from wax) but it really good for quickly laying out simple beats. and with a bit of experience and knowledge of this machine it is possible to create very complex and rich beats.

i copped mine for 150.00 oh yeah im selling a sp 303 as is first dial for editing samples doesnt work who ever want it make me serious offer.

Check out Bye, October, perfectstorm and late night epxpression. Those are some of my old 505 beats.. I think it shows a good range of what the 505 is capable of.

Cool stuff Frantic - do you still use the 505, or has the 404 and 555 pretty much replaced it? I was just listening to your 404 beats collection again, and I must say they are really cool and inspiring.

I often think that, despite what everyone likes say (ie - it's all about the person, not the machine, etc) there is something to be said about how a machine's interface and workflow just leads and lends itself to the creation of beats you might not otherwise have come up with.

I saw a great change in my music when I switched my studio center from sp to mpc. Now i am produce more eerie, deep, bassy beats. Something like cypress temples of the boom and some scary ass shit blended with it.

Yeah, that's definitely very true, it does provide a different work-flow and different limits, so naturally your work itself will be different.

It's very noticeable not just when looking at when I'm making a beat on my SP-555 or on my SP-606, the music that will come out will be pretty different, even with the same sample sources.

Has anyone ever tried to make the exact same beat on different machines? I tried, but did not manage to really succeed.

I do that all the time! I make a pattern on the computer, then translate it to my RY30, SP-606 or MC-505.

All three of those machines have capable step-sequencers, yet they all end up sounding completely different - not just the actual sounds, but the way they skip and move etc.

When you come up with a killer pattern, it's always worth seeing how it sounds from another machine...

The man might make the magic, but the machine certainly adds its own flavour..

I gave the 505 to one of the dudes in my crew. The 404 pretty much replaced the 505 for me. And yes, the workflow def leads to different results.

Yes,each machine has "its way of doing things"...lol
I come from a Sampletrak background so I was looking for a 404 or 555 and I got the 505 by accident and I'm surprised that my workflow is better with it.
I found it really slow at first but now it's cool.

ya.. thats what moved me away from the 505. Just to slow. Thats what I love about the 303/404/555. I can do everything as fast as I can think it. I really miss the pitch function on the 505 tho. The sequencer was damn nice also. I loved being able to swing on the eighth note !

What do you mean by "slow?" I'm interested in getting one. Is it slow because of the visual interface, or slow because it has like fat loading times?
