tape recorder (tascam, fostex etc.) vs consumer tape deck

Post by false tropics »

i'm sure it's on here somewhere, i just couldn't find it.

i have a goodwill tape deck (some jvc model with pitch control) that i somethimes record to, and it sounds real good, but i'm curious if a recorder would be noticably different. like does dbx for example, how big of a difference is there.

any thoughts would be appreciated!

The pitch will be nearly of same quality.
But with a four track, you're paying $20-$40 more, but getting the ability to record with multi-track feature, plus EQ a little.

DBX is an encoder/decoder, unlike Dolby which is a recording tech that doesn't need a decoder and increases fidelity even if dolby isn't present on the playback device. So if you recorded with DBX, you'd have to play back on system with DBX else your track would not sound right. If you play back with DBX, I find it has better noise reduction than Dolby.

If you're just making tapes to bump in your car, stick with your current deck.
