new s20 n 404sx beat...... sunset in hawaii

Post by L.C.W »

started this today made with 2 records and about 4 or five different samples, then the vox chopped and added in.
the s20 handled the main melody chops, and percussion loop, and the 404 provided the drum sounds.
recorded bird sounds on a little nature walk yesterday on my iphone
recorded scratched sounds though the samplers but without sampling em to the samplers.
i used a daw to record the different elements one at a time. will add more to it and use it on a future beat tape.

Nice. I just watched an interview that guy did w Rupert Neve. Sounds great but the voc sample is distracting to me it is in a different key than the main melodic sample.

I just winged it on the turntable pitch, you think it should be in a lower key?

Does not matter lower or higher, just that the tonal reference is the same and keys work together. For example if you start with tonal center you find the melodic sample has been adjusted so A is no longer 440.00Hz. That is where I start usually is making sure things are able to be tuned properly so other samples will work easier with them. You don't have to use A/440 as reference though just makes it easier. I have 2 pads on my 404 always with major and minor scales in them to refer to when working. You could isolate a single note if you wanted and use tuning software or a guitar tuner to make sure it is a whole note in tune. (Tuners generally always use A-440 as their reference) Another thing I sometimes use is chromatic pitch on 404SX which would keep the sample in tune assuming it was in tune in the first place.

Anyway the closest notes in the melodic sample are B, D F#, A which make a D6 or Bm7 chord. It is only 4 notes which is not enough to get a full scale and help you further.

You could just play notes on a keyboard and make sure each sample works with the keyboard notes and go from there.

Sorry I could not help further or make a simpler post but I have my own limits!

:)

Thanks for the tip om thats a good idea having some reference scales on hand when pitching samples, i do find it hard sometimes to get synths to match a sample. Ill try pitch shifting the vox in cubase to match better. I also noticed the kick is almost all sub without any low mids or mids, the kick cant be heard on my iphone, might layer another or distort it a little.
