SP-404 resample delay/lag

Post by gry.clds »

I'm returning my 303 because the majority of the times I try to use resample to create a drum loop or to combine samples I end with some delay before the button actually lights up, which messes up everything. I always end up having to find workarounds.

I figure it's the memory card, but I can't go buying memory cards on Ebay to test that. This also gives me an excuse to buy a 404 because one of the main reasons I wanted the 303 was for live use, but after I ordered it, I read that it isn't ideal for live, and a 404 would be a better idea.

Anyway, my question is should I expect to come across this problem with the 404?/Is it common? And if so, would buying another memory card fix it?

I have cards and a 404SX, where do you live? I know the 404 has processing delays but no idea if it hesitates in the way you describe.

Florida. I haven't bought a 404 yet, still waiting on the go head to return the 303.

Pretty much if I have a snare kick and hihat on three separate pads and I'm trying to resample all three into a drum loop, the kick, snare or hihat will end up sounding a later than I pressed it. Which will end up messing up the loop. I've tried doing it with only the two drums, but even then sometimes it happens. This goes for samples too, if I have one pad of a sample with no effects then another pad with an effect, and I'm trying to play them live while resampling, something always messes up. I've never gone a whole session without this issue happening a few times.

I'm just interested in seeing if I should be expecting this with the 404.

I see, well I know the 555 does this- it lags, but it works and does not shift the samples in the resampled pad. i would try to get your hands on a 404 and try it before you buy it. i could test the 404SX if that is what you are considering and not the og404.

I'm considering the OG, unless I can get an 404SX for around the same price. I guess I'll have to see if it's possible to use to test one at guitar center or something, because I don't know anyone that uses SP in my area.

Here's what I mean, and no, it is not my timing. My phone's camera sucks, so this is as good as it gets. http://youtu.be/vbeYfaYcHZ4

Have you tried internal vs external (card) banks?

Yeah, same thing...That just reminded me of something, it only happens when the samples are in stereo. If I resample them to mono it doesn't happen, but then I super low sounds, so have to EQ the samples and resample them a few times to get them to a desired level.

Interesting. You could try reformatting the card and initializing the 303 to factory. I don't see any mention of an internal processing level adjust like on other SP. Might simply be it does not have enough horsepower to work with stereo samples. Would make sense as most people prob use mono to save memory/card space anyway?

Initialize the SP-303’s memory [CANCEL] + [DEL] + [REMAIN] + Power On
Format a memory card [CANCEL] + [REMAIN] ➔ BANK [C] or [D] ➔ [DEL]

I've done that a few times before, never fixed the issue. I suppose I'll try it again, once I finish with this track.

Ya my guess is it is just too old to do stereo samples well. It has to stream all the samples you play and also write a stereo file. Maybe try resampling down to mono? In that case you might as well use mono samples to begin with I guess.

I can't sample all sources in mono, if I'm sampling something off my computer it has to be in stereo. Same thing with other devices. I think I've only been able to sample from my turntable in mono, but then I have to resample it over and over until it's loud enough. If I had a mixer i'm guessing that wouldn't be an issue.

Ehhh, if the stereo lagging issue is just my SP, I rather just return it while I still can. This is my excuse to get a 404 anyway.

Strange- why do stereo sources have to be resampled in stereo? (nm, I see bc they are too quiet for some reason) Have you tried sampling in mono and unplugging the Right connection on the 303 input? Have you tried panning the computer output all to the Left and turning up the computer output?

I bet you end up with a 404. Anyway happy shopping!

With my computer if I sample it in mono then unplug the right connection, I end up with no sound. If I unplug the right connection then sample, I end up with a really low sample. I think the case is different with my turntable. But there was a reason I stopped doing that with my turntable, can't remember why atm though.

Thanks for the help. I'll just have to lurk Ebay and Guitar Center's website until something comes up. Everything on Ebay is pretty pricey atm.
