Loop Pedal + Sp404 = ?

Post by Jovi »

Edit: After looking at different loop pedals it seems that they can get a good deal pricier then the samplers..lol! Basically any piece of equipment that has a live looping function with a good amount of overdubbing.

something like this might be perfect...i don't know, seems I've got to learn more about how these things work.

http://en.audiofanzine.com/guitar-delay ... eview.html

or this....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 0zMmxg_q-w

Sidenote: as a loop pedal in this sense might be redundant for beat makers another reason I was looking into one was to use for guitar playing. I figured it'd be nice to find something that I can make use of with both guitar/drum playing and sampling/beat making (live sets/home beat making) but hey, if there was some new thing that we could all add to the arsenal, that'd be some hip shit! :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------

hiya folks!

So after some thought this came up...I feel my 2 main hindrances with the sp404sx are the lack of a good pitch shift and live looping.

After some search I've heard the sp555 has the live looping down, but I was wondering if anyone has tried using a loop pedal with there sp404 and how it's worked out for them.

I can almost see it working but I can't work out the wiring in my head (probably some converter or something that's missing...)

I imagined:

Sp404---->Loop Pedal--converter port 1--> Sp404 (for fx)
--converter port 2-->Preamp,monit.,etc (output)

In other words having the sp 404 be the source input (sampling), to feed in through the loop pedal to build up loops together and have it go back into the sp to add fx, sample, etc. as well as feed into your sound system, pre amps, monitors, etc.

I have no idea if such a converter exists (that can feed the audio back through again as well as to the output, if any of this makes sense lol)
All i know is so far through my make shift wiring is that I can't think of another way of doing it..hehe

But as far as workflow goes....live looping! Live sets...Live looping!
as far as I can tell it wouldn't add much to pack around. You could take the thing along with you (moderately, no coffee shop bouts or things of the like)

but would it work as I'm imagining it? or would I be better off buying a secondary sp555 or something else entirely?

It would be nice just to put some money down on a moderately cheap piece to compliment it rather then go all out on a new sampler or something. Otherwise some folks just prefer the sp 404 and all.

so I found this feller to be a good candidate
http://en.audiofanzine.com/guitar-delay ... eview.html

it's about 125$

it doesn't come with any effects. just a simple 5min storage, unlimited overdubs (1 buttton, you add one at a time delete a previous loop you don't like)

- how i'm thinking this will help is just in saving time resampling a bunch if your wanting to layer samples and the like

- you can do live looping with the sp404 at shows and what not.

- the sp404 will act as the fx for the pedal if you want.

I'm thinking that's about the jist of it...I can't help but think i'm missing something though...lol

SP -> LOOPER -> KOASS -> EARHOLES

This would seem like the closest you could get without risking dropping the audio or making an infinite feedback.

can't have it all i guess...hehe

I figure I could make the

sp404---->looper---->amp, system work well enough to justify it.
Thanks for the feedback mate!

Although I'm thinking maybe even just being able to loop something while you transition inbetween tracks (doing a live show) might make it worth the buy.

say loop the last bar or 2 to while you mess around your data banks looking hitting samples and whatever it is you'd do. I'm imagining the loop pedal sets the bpm based on your 2 foot taps (start---end)

This can be useful if you want to do a beat mix with your own tracks assuming they're the same bpm.

You loop a little bit of your tune, if you're using patterns, and then, say, have a pattern for your next track of drums and nothing else then overlap that on the looper with an overdup (since it won't match up perfectly)...then you cut out the looper and seamlessly turn on your full instrumental pattern.

I've seen this done even on the KP3 with a dnb mix using a groovebox. Very cool technique.

i use mpc (used to be 303)----> boss dd-7-----> 303---> speakers

this is incredibly fun. the dd-7 is alright for looping. that jam man seems like you could do much more with. i suggest at least trying it if nothing for the experimenting you can do with it.

I tried using the 404SX as an aux last night but most if not all of the effects introduce too much lag to be useful. You end up with phasing issues.

It will work if you bring the 404 back into their own channels on the mixer instead of the returns though. I did this a ton when I had a big A&H with 6 auxes- so fun.

Use an aux send from mixer-->SP-->channels on mixer--->etc.

that's neat! could see myself using that for a live situation. I could see myself looping myself playing the sample then having designated pads for the full pattern for when I want to free my hands up for other stuff.

I'm going for this fellow http://www.long-mcquade.com/products/20281/

I figure with the Sp I'll have all the fx I'll need anyways.

Instrument/mic---->Sp404s------>Loop Pedal------>output

Here's video of dude using KP3 looper function to mix his own patterns to give you an idea of a possible way of doing it.

I have one but never used it in that way. But the video impressed me and it was relevant to the thread.

Most looper pedals and delay pedals with looping functionality are stomp-start recording, stomp-end loop so you usually can't set a BPM before hand, it'll loop whatever you did between stomps. There are some that have midi tho so you could sync them up to some other gear with clock out. I think the electroharmonix 2880 and 45000 have midi but aren't terribly cheap. I think they also have multiple loop banks so you aren't overdubbing onto just one track.

As for other loopers, I have a Kaoss Pad3 and Kaossilator pro. The Kaoss pad has some really amazing FX and 4 loop banks, it also has a longer loop length than the Kaossilator Pro.. But the Kaossilator Pro has infinite overdub which is great for layering up sounds in consequetive passes without using up multiple loop banks (of which it also has 4) The KP3 has to be "primed" for sampling then you hit sample again to start the recording.. So unless you're ambidexterous or well coordinated you might miss the perfect timing of the first beat.. The Kaossilator however can be put into Record/overdub mode and left running so you can prepare yourself for the next pass and try hammer out a perfect sequence on the SP404. Those loops (on kaopro) can then be shortened by multiples of 2 to glitch/loop them, you can adjust the volume of each of the 4 loop banks individually and you can also selectively erase sections of them. On the KP3 the loop can be "sliced" into 8 sections which you can then remove to short-loop specific sections.
