Have not 4 tracked in so long- but you generally use a click and some lead in giving you time to start your new track on time. There is no way to sync the old Tascams and such to anything so you have to do it manually. I never did any multitracking on my Tascam with electronic instruments it was always stuff i played live so it was up to me to keep time. I can foresee with SP and sequencers etc the tracks are going to drift- not sure how you could get around that other than trigger the pads live and don't use sequences so you can continually adjust and stay in time with previous tracks.

I just got new belts for my Tascam and also have another 4 track on it's way so I will be glad to report back once I am working with them.

I've only had a 424 original for a few days, I'd say that the CUE function is what your looking for. Being able to hear a track but not record over it, which on the 424 is by using left/right panning and channel selection.

What portastudio do you have exactly?

Perfect sync isn't possible. But setting up a cue in your track before the actual song is what you're looking for.

I.E. do a quick trigger of some sample 4 times to make a count off before the actual track then edit that out on the final recording.
