wow pele, 2 somewhat nasty posts in a row- they stand out like a pink elephant around here. I thought the first one was funny to a degree. Maybe you could try not to attack so much and instead offer us your opinion or insight, I know it would be welcomed. Just a thought.
:)

Right on, thx.

I am thinking the OP felt attacked by his peers and simply didn't understand what all the hype or enthusiasm was for J Dilla and tried to really "get it" assuming the people around him had SOME reason for getting so irate about it. He gave it a good chance as far as I could tell assuming there must be something to what so many folks seem to feel about his music. Sometimes appreciation is not solely about our gut feelings as you suggest (though I agree is the most important thing) and there can be other factors, history, context, etc. at play that would take time to understand. Elvis is like that- he was BAD ASS when he hit the scene in the '50s but now it seems tame and dated. Lots of other things that were important to us maybe at a younger age or as part of a movement like the dawn of hip-hop. I remember buying "Jam On It" on vinyl in Brooklyn as a kid and it takes me back to when that sound was fresh and new. Someone might listen to it today and not like it at all and not get the context- like "Rappers Delight" etc. Maybe there is some of that going on I'm not sure.

Anyway- I get what your saying- if you don't like something who gives a shit what other people say- I agree- but this thread I think was asking genuinely for more info.

From this thread I learned more about JD and finding out he died so young from a disease and kept working on music right till the end actually has an effect on how I perceive him and his music. I don't LIKE it more but it has an effect- I am more open to it maybe. It has a positive spin to it rather than it being some dark story about him getting shot over drugs or being an asshole etc.

I also got hipped to his instrumentals from Ruff Draft which are great!

/my $.02

uhmm he did some very nice beats :)
just wanted to add Fantastic Vol 2 by Slum Village, as for me its the most influencing work by mr dilla. Would definitly suggest to give it a listen as i think it has a very consistent vibe through the whole album which is something i really appreciate

I can usually identify a Dilla beat just by hearing it. He's got a lot of important work, and I respect and like all of it, but you will find me listening to premo or madlib when it comes to the popular guys. I still think the quasimoto albums are the best of all time (to my ear, obviously) and that's what distinguishes madlib for me, I know he's extremely "overrated" as well...

Flylo and Samiyam are kind of obviously influenced but I think it's presumptuous to claim that they "wouldn't be making beats" without him, they've both evolved hiphop in their own ways

dilla revisionism was bound 2 happen in response 2 the post-post-dilla (low end brainfeeder et al) stannery and blowout but his passing was huge at the time. stones throw had been releasing good material n there was buzz leading up 2 donuts release. internet was heavy when he died n i did the whole stock up on supermarket donuts n play his catalogue, discovering amazing shit i never knew he was behind. and then i heard the beat tapes.

nobody wants 2 see those tshirts or the 'rebirth of detroit' artwork anymore and rapfan sentiment re his legacy might ebb n flow superficially but imo he's certified. just cos there are other brilliant rap producers doesnt mean he wasn't one of the greats. there have been lots of exciting rap sounds.

it sucks that hes not still around 2 make music and i wish he was.
