Question for you Tascam doods

Thanks for posting up the manual I will have to look into the sine wave thing and do some experimenting.

Example?

I played a little pattern on my ESX and recorded it into the tascam with DBX on, no EQ settings or anything like that, just straight from the ESX. I recorded at highest tape speed possible (High Speed setting + 12% pitch adjuster all the way to the right).

Track recorded with DBX on, played with DBX on, no EQ adjustment on playback.

formal- ya, I already found that site and joined the mailing list. I'm all over researching it and prepping it before I use it. Thanks! I am excited it is a 4 track but would have been ok with 2 track as well. I have a good enough memory of my Tascam Porta One to know when I get it going again it will be cool for some things but it is def not very clear and the Nakamichi is renowned for it's wide freq response. And it just looks cool as hell.

hseiken- I am about to listen to the tracks- can you upload one as a "control" flat eq and no DBX ?

Listened to the tracks.

-The DBX r/p has least amount of noise by far- good bass, but loses the open air of the recording.
-The DBX r/0 is crispy- has the air but is harsh and also has most noise of the 3.
-The no DBX r/EQ has noticeable noise but retains the air and high end.

Honestly the 1st track reminds me of a sound I had recording to cassettes and playing in boom box to skate to etc when I was a kid. For general listening and esp at high volumes the DBX r/p would be my first pick.

I think for other music production I would go with EQ, Waves X noise, multiband compression, etc. as a first try rather than the DBX route.

I don't really hear any noticable "effect" of the DBX r/0 track other than that hyped crispy high end.

Very interesting to look at this in finer detail. I will be reading about DBX further on Wikipedia and the Nakamichi 500 manual which has a section on it.

I will def also offer my own sound tests from my Porta One when I get it running. I could even use the same track as you for comparison purposes.

The first track IS the control since DBX is simply noise reduction. If you listen closely in the cans, during echos/delay of single sound, you can hear the noise of the tape 'inside' of the echo. Only thing I could think of for 'control' is to do a digital recording? But it's still going to go through the analog of the ESX (tubes) and the cabling into the recorder. The only way to get a true 'control' is a pure digital audio fabrication via DAW and some vsts and stuff.
